How do I [42M] handle a conversation with my partner [44F] of 2 years who booked an international solo trip right after my financial emergency?
My partner (44F) and I (42M) have been together for about 2 years. We don't live together. Overall, we have a lot of love for each other, but there is a recurring pattern where mutual consideration and teamwork are missing when things get uncomfortable or stressful.
I run a business and recently made some major investments, so my budget is tight and my focus and funds have to go toward my work and repayments. A few days ago, I got hit with an unexpected expense ($5,500 for emergency car repairs), which wiped out more than I had budgeted for our week-long trip (that we had planned to do inside the US).
She has upcoming PTO from her job. A couple of days ago, she told me she wants to take a vacation alone since I can't afford to travel right now and she doesn't want to lose her time off or points. I was very honest with her: I explained that while I am dealing with an emergency setback, her instinct to leave me behind for a solo trip feels hurtful, rather than staying local, supporting each other, and finding low-cost ways to spend downtime together as a team.
This caused an argument where she became defensive, said she couldn't afford to pay my way, and claimed I was just trying to hold her back. The next day, she shifted into a very affectionate, playful mood. We went out, I spent nearly $200 (which I'm now thinking could have been something towards local or lower-cost vacay), and had a warm evening together, but the core issue was completely swept under the rug. She also mentioned during our date that she "just wants fun" and doesn't want to hear about my work or businesses.
Today, while at work, she updated our shared calendar: she booked a week-long solo trip across the Atlantic to Europe for next week. She mentioned in our previous argument that she is using airline miles and staying in cheap hostels to keep costs down, but the fact is that she booked an international vacation knowing full well where I stood and how unsupported this makes me feel.
I am not trying to control her actions. She is a grown adult with her own money and time. But to me, being in a serious relationship means you navigate rough patches together as a unit. Taking off to another continent for leisure while your partner is dealing with a financial emergency feels like living two separate single lives. Furthermore, when I hear that I am talking too much about my business, hustle, and work... it makes me think I need a partner who understands sacrifice and hustle, not someone who expects lifestyle dating and detaches when real-world pressure hits.
I am planning to sit down with her in person in two days on her day off to talk about our future.
I would appreciate an outside perspective on how to approach this conversation, how to clearly communicate that this standard of partnership doesn't work for me, and whether a fundamental difference like this can be resolved.
