New player here; can I start playing even today?

Sorry if people are asking this often. But I haven’t played Destiny 2 since launch and I’ve wanted to pick it back up recently. But would I be at an incredible disadvantage or would I be crazy to pick it up now? What would I be missing? Is it just not feasible to start fresh anymore?
