Desert Nomad: Journey of Reckoning - Chapter 1 - HellishStampede - RWBY [Archive of Our Own]

Summary: A story based in RWBY's world, it's about a Nomadic desert tribe called The Morrow Tribe trying to Unite Vacuo's disparate Clans together to fight the Grimm.

They're met by all kinds of resistance including an unseen threat that caused two of their scouts to go missing and the tribe is forced to flee as Communications are jammed and there's no way to call for help.

“Wren! We’ve got a problem!” a voice called.

Wren sighed. “Ulysses,” he said without moving.

The old man huffed, catching his breath. “Scouts aren’t reporting in. I think we’ve got trouble.”

“Probably just boozing because they're bored. It’s been quiet out here for weeks.”

“I thought so too,” Ulysses said, tense. “But I tried the hunters too. Nothing. Dead silence.”

That made Wren open his eyes. “What about the emergency channel?”

“Dead. Like the world up and died on us while we weren’t looking.”

Wren rose, the shade already a memory. “So much for a nap.”

“You think it’s a herd? Grimm headed our way?” Ulysses asked as they walked.

“Either that or everyone’s pulling a real committed prank,” Wren replied.

They trudged through the camp toward the comm station, the sun baking the sand beneath their boots.

“Makes no sense,” Ulysses muttered. “We were careful picking this spot. These sands have been dry of Grimm for weeks.”

“Maybe they went on vacation," Wren said dryly. "Decided to come home.”

Ulysses scowled. “I don’t see how you can joke at a time like this, boy.”

He glanced around, making sure no one was close enough to overhear. Then he leaned toward Wren and lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper.

"We could be under attack!”

“What’s got you so riled, old man? Grimm herds ain’t new in Vacuo. That and scorpions in your bed.”

“Aw, forget the damn scorpions,” Ulysses grumbled. “Your father made me your second for a reason. I might not be as tough as Wayne or quick as Jethro, but I still got something to contribute to the tribe.”

Wren gave a faint smile. “No one’s saying otherwise. You’re doing fine. I’m worried too. I’m walking, aren’t I? Let’s see what the fuss is.”
