To delete or not to delete on a 2013 Sportwagen TDI 6M

Hey all, I'm at a crossroads with our 2013 Golf Sportwagen 6M.

Car just broke down again for the second time in 4 months. Stalled in the middle of the road, engine turns (kind of) but won't start. No power steering, have to coast to the side of the road and put on the hazards and get towed, etc. Happened when I gave it a bit too much accel when I could have shifted down.

The last time it happened, the mechanic took everything apart to inspect the turbo and exhaust system (all was intact). Weirdly when they put it back together again everything magically worked. They said it could have been a stuck EGR valve. Was working great again for 4 months until tonight.

It was hauling when it was working and I love driving it.

The past year I've had to spend 2k CAD just getting stuff done outside of regular maintenance. Between the first breakdown, a disconnected intake hose (I probably could have fixed myself), AC issues... it's all adding up. It has some rocker rust and rust is really starting in a bunch of other places. It has a bunch of body dings and dents and cracks. Not pristine in any way.

Anyway, a DPF delete and tune would be about 5-6k CAD, but that would include the EGR delete as well. Mechanic suggested that would likely solve this problem moving forward (particularly the EGR delete)

I love this car, but trying to keep rational. Car has to be reliable for family driving. We just got a second car so it's not like I need this car or anything, but it's nice to have as a backup/second car.

I know this is essentially a financial decision, but part of me wonders if I got the delete done would it go another ~10 years, with ~1-2k/year to keep it running? Or is it likely I'll be facing another 5k bill soon for something else...

What should I consider here?
