If you look at the global commercial dragon fruit (pitaya) market, international agricultural trade doesn’t track individual backyard cultivar names (like 'American Beauty' or 'Dark Star').
Instead, global production & export volume are categorized by 3 primary species and fruit types.

According to global agricultural market data, here is the exact breakdown of the top 3 commercial dragon fruit categories worldwide by volume & market share:

**1. Red-Fleshed Dragon Fruit (*****Hylocereus polyrhizus*** **/** ***costaricensis*****)**
 **Global Market Share: \~54.3%**

Commercial Overview: Characterized by vivid magenta skin and deep red-to-purple flesh.

Red-fleshed varieties command the largest share of global production, powered by massive commercial farming operations across Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Central America due to high yields and strong juice/processing demand.

**2. White-Fleshed / Vietnam White (*****Hylocereus undatus***)
 **Global Market Share: \~33.4%**

Commercial Overview: The classic pink-skinned fruit with white flesh and black seeds.

Vietnam White is the dominant titan of standard supermarket imports across North America and Europe, valued for its reliable growth cycles, mild flavor profile, and sturdy shelf life during international transport.

**3. Yellow Dragon Fruit / Palora (*****Selenicereus megalanthus***)
 **Global Market Share: \~12.3%**

 Commercial Overview:
Featuring bright yellow skin & translucent white flesh, yellow dragon fruit—notably originating from the Palora canton in Ecuador—is widely recognized as the sweetest commercially grown pitaya variety.

Clarifying the Ranking: Vietnam White vs. Ecuador Palora

While intuition often places popular imports neck-&-neck, total global production volume places them differently:

Volume Leader:
Red-fleshed varieties hold the #1 spot globally by total tonnage, with Vietnam White firmly securing #2.

** **The Palora Niche:
While Ecuador's Palora is the gold standard for flavor & commands the highest price premium in luxury markets (often selling for 2.5x to 3.5x the price of standard red or white fruit), yellow dragon fruit sits at #3 by volume.
Because yellow types take longer to mature on the vine & require intensive care to avoid cosmetic blemishes, they make up a smaller percentage of overall world market tonnage.
