Let players agree on a longer map length cap after matching in Ranked Play

Discussion

What if Ranked Play allowed both players to choose a maximum map length after they’ve been matched, before any map cards are shown?

The rules would be:

  • Each player chooses a cap of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 minutes.

- The lower of the two choices becomes the cap for that match.

- Players have 10 seconds to choose. No response defaults to 5 minutes.

- If both players confirm early, the match proceeds immediately.

- The agreed cap stays fixed for the entire match.

For example, if one player chooses 8 minutes and the other chooses 6, only maps up to 6 minutes would be eligible. If either player chooses 5 minutes—or doesn’t respond—the cap stays at 5.

This is a maximum length, so choosing 10 minutes would still allow shorter maps. It wouldn’t mean every round becomes a marathon.

Since the choice happens after matching, it wouldn’t split the queue or add another matchmaking restriction. It would simply allow a wider map pool when both players are comfortable with longer songs, while protecting anyone who wants to keep the existing cap.

The obvious limitation is that longer maps would only become available when both players opt in. I think that’s a reasonable trade-off: nobody should be forced into a longer match just because their opponent wants one.

Would this be a worthwhile way to introduce longer maps into Ranked Play?
