Feeling behind on thesis. tips?
I’m in my 4th year of undergrad and doing a thesis course this year. Over the past month, I’ve had a lot going on in my personal life, and I’m starting to notice it affecting my schoolwork.
I know this year is really important, so I want to get myself back on track while it’s still September/early October. For context, I’m about 2–3 weeks into the school year and I’ve barely done any reading toward narrowing down my research question. I have a general topic, but I haven’t really started digging into the literature yet, and I already feel like I’m falling behind.
At the same time, I know I’m an overthinker and can be way too hard on myself, especially when I’m doing something completely new. No one in my immediate circle has done an undergraduate thesis before, so I don’t really have anyone to compare my progress to or ask what’s “normal.”
So I thought I’d ask here: how behind am I actually at this point? Is being 2–3 weeks in without a solid research question a major concern, or is this still relatively early in the process?
I’m definitely hoping for a little reassurance lol, but more than anything I’d really appreciate advice from people who have done a thesis before. What helped you stay on top of things? Are there any habits, timelines, or mistakes I should be aware of now so I can prevent myself from falling further behind?
I know it’s still early, but I also don’t want to keep telling myself “I have time” until suddenly I don’t.
