Katztalk

The opened door.

I knew something was wrong the second I pulled into my driveway.
It was almost midnight, and the neighborhood was completely quiet. The kind of quiet where you can hear your own tires crunch against the pavement.
I sat in my car for a moment, staring at my house.
Everything looked normal.
The porch light was on. The curtains were closed. Nothing seemed out of place.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching me.
I finally grabbed my purse and stepped out of the car.
That’s when I noticed the front door.
It was open.
Not wide open.
Just a few inches.
I froze.
I knew I’d locked it before leaving.
I always locked my door.
I stood there staring at the tiny gap, trying to convince myself I was imagining things.
Maybe I hadn’t shut it all the way.
Maybe the wind had pushed it open.
But there hadn’t been any wind.
I slowly walked toward the house.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
I pushed the door open.
The living room was dark.
I reached inside and flipped on the light.
Everything looked exactly the way I’d left it.
The television was off. The blankets were folded on the couch. My shoes were still beside the coffee table.
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.
“You’re being ridiculous,” I whispered to myself.
I locked the door.
Then I checked every room.
Kitchen.
Bathroom.
Bedroom.
Closet.
Nothing.
Nobody.
I laughed nervously at myself and changed into pajamas.
For the next hour, everything felt normal.
Until my phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Unknown Number.
You shouldn’t have checked the closet.
My blood went cold.
I stared at the message.
I hadn’t told anyone I had checked the closet.
I immediately looked toward my bedroom closet.
The doors were closed.
I didn’t move.
Another message appeared.
You always check it twice.
I stopped breathing.
Because I did.
Every night.
I slowly backed away from the bedroom.
My hands were shaking as I called 911.
While I waited for someone to answer, another message came through.
Don’t call them.
I heard something downstairs.
A soft creak.
Then another.
Someone was walking across my floor.
I ran into the bathroom and locked the door.
I could hear footsteps coming up the stairs.
Slow.
Careful.
They stopped outside my bedroom.
I covered my mouth to keep myself from making a sound.
Then my phone buzzed again.
You shouldn’t have come home tonight.
The footsteps started moving again.
Closer.
Closer.
Until they stopped directly outside the bathroom door.
I stared at the doorknob.
It slowly began to turn.
Then my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered without thinking.
For several seconds, there was nothing but silence.
Then I heard my own voice.
Whispering.
“Don’t open the door.”
I nearly dropped the phone.
It was my voice.
Exactly my voice.
Then the person outside the bathroom knocked.
Three times.
I heard the voice on the phone whisper again.
“Whatever happens, don’t let them see you.”
The bathroom doorknob stopped moving.
Silence.
Then footsteps.
They were walking away.
Down the hallway.
Down the stairs.
I waited.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Finally, I heard the front door slam.
I stayed locked in that bathroom until the police arrived.
They searched the entire house.
They found nobody.
But one officer noticed something strange.
There was a second phone in my bedroom.
It was sitting underneath my pillow.
It wasn’t mine.
The police checked it.
There were dozens of recordings on it.
Videos of me.
Sleeping.
Leaving for work.
Coming home.
Sitting on the couch.
Walking around my house.
Some of them had been recorded only hours earlier.
I couldn’t understand how someone had been inside my house without me noticing.
Then the officer opened the newest video.
It had been recorded that night.
At 11:47 PM.
The camera was pointed at my front door.
I watched myself walk through it.
The timestamp showed 11:47.
But I didn’t get home until midnight.
The officer looked at me.
“That’s impossible.”
I nodded.
Because I knew exactly what he was looking at.
The video showed me standing in my doorway.
Smiling at the camera.
Then the recording zoomed in.
And I heard my own voice whisper:
“She’s going to come home soon.”
The video ended.
Neither of us spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
One final message.
Now you know why I left the door open.
I looked toward the front door.
It was open again.
And this time…
I knew I hadn’t opened it.
