Lack of Research Exp While Applying

Admissions & Applications

Hey, y'all!

I am a 2024 graduate from a Psychology program applying to graduate school.
My credentials and resume are underwhelming if not atrocious. I have my reasons, but I don't think these things would matter to the college; I know that I have the determination to complete my PhD. Since graduation, I have worked a couple of jobs and, finally, recently, gotten on medication for my mental health (kind of insane, I know). It's made a world of difference, and that's what gives me the confidence to believe I should go for it.

My undergrad work, though? That's a different story.
I failed a semester of classes (for an unrelated major, but it still counts towards my GPA), and my CUM GPA is a 2.7.
I have no research experience but worked in a variety of positions for the 4 years of school, changing jobs often due to changes in my school schedule and needs. After graduation, I worked briefly as a contractor for the university I graduated from (the work was not degree-related).

The things I have going for me is that I made the Dean's List once after changing majors and made a B- in a class taught by the director of the program I am applying for but that's all. Additionally, I have a couple of connections from my time as a contractor and an on-campus job I worked in undergrad that would be willing to write my rec letters.

Do y'all think I have a chance? It's a pretty good school, which is part of my anxiety. Is there anything I can do to increase my odds? Would taking the GREs be of any use (they're not required for this particular college)?

I definitely need honest advice, but please be mindful of how you speak to me. At the end of the day, I am a person on the other side of this screen. I'm not delusional. I know I don't look the greatest on paper, but I've tried so many jobs (retail, office, fast-food, sales, etc.), and I know that the only thing I really have passion for is studying. Passion doesn't pay the bills, and I doubt I can coast through this application on it. If you have advice on what I can do to increase my odds, please please let me know.
