my job is introducing genAI and I'm terrified I'll lose it
Dinner is Pik-Nik shoestring chips, orange Fanta, and business cat figure for company (not eaten)
I'm in a state tonight. I'm not going to go into too much detail to avoid doxing myself, but I work for a contractor for my states government benefits office and recently we got training about using generative artificial intelligence in our work. I personally have several issues with GenAI, but to be blunt on the most selfish level I don't want to be part of the massive lawsuit that can and will come from someone getting hurt or worse because the hallucinating computer couldn't be trusted around their information; because someone will get lazy with it.
On the other side the training specifically labeled people who don't want to use generative AI as "the rebel". Initially that just left a bad taste in my mouth but now I'm terrified that it's an indicator of what the future environment is going to be like. I've already spoken to my supervisor about this and sent her my concerns which she said she sent on to management, and I felt confident about it at the time but now I'm worried that I painted a target on my back.
To make things worse all the implementations are just... writing emails! I can write a damn email, I can write a damn good email! And we have to quality check both the prompt and the output, which just makes the whole thing really inefficient!
To be clear I like my job! It's not the career I was going for but I feel like the work I do is impactful in a positive way, I like the people I work with, and the money definitely doesn't hurt. if my personal problems with generative AI were just that- personal- I wouldn't have said anything! I would have just put up with it! I don't want to lose my job over this!
So now I'm spiraling. Am I really going to be punished for giving a shit?! I don't want to damage the environment, I don't want to waste resources, I don't want to risk clients information, I don't want to be in an environment where we're dependent on a hallucinating computer, and I don't want to lose my job!
I think tomorrow I'm going to work on my resume just in case, but tonight I'm just going to find something to watch so I don't have to think about this too much. Fingers crossed I still have a job tomorrow. /hj
