Will I experience racism when visiting as a black person?
I recently saw a post here from an Asian person saying that people often yell ‘ching chong’ to them in public.
I was horrified to read this!!! And it seems from the thread of comments, this isn’t a one off experience - others said that they have experienced it too, or witnessed racial slurs in schools.
I honestly can’t believe it. I would like to know, if I was to visit Copenhagen as a black woman, with my bi racial son, is there a chance we will experience racism also?
Copenhagen was on my list of places to travel to, but I was deeply shocked by what seems to be open racism. I would like to be prepared.
What should I realistically expect when visiting?
If you are black in Copenhagen, what have you experienced?
I would also like to know why people seemingly are able to say this stuff in public, without being challenged?
I saw a couple of comments saying that, culturally, people tend to keep to themselves. But it does make me wonder whether deep-rooted racism among a lot of natives is actually part of the answer. Because if you supposedly disagree with what’s happening, yet say nothing while someone is being victimised right in front of you because of their race, that’s pretty absurd. But I guess that’s a question for another post.
For context- I was born & raised in London. In all of my 35+ years of life, I‘ve personally never experienced open public racism towards me. Yes racism exists here - I’ve seen and heard of people making remarks to others - and they have always been challenged & corrected, with someone coming to the defence of the victim.
