Credit Cards are for math lovers: "5X" does not mean "5%"
Why do credit card companies love saying "5X points" instead of just telling us the actual cash percentage?
Trying to calculate what "X" is actually worth is unnecessarily painful. With most cards, 1 point is only worth Rs. 0.25, meaning your "5X" multiplier is really just a modest 1.25% return.
What is the obvious reason for this wordplay? It lets banks devalue points in the fine print down the road without ever changing the flashy "5X" headline on the marketing page.
But is stealth devaluation the only reason, or is it mostly just behavioral psychology to make 5X feel bigger than 1%? What do you think?
