High elves for the Alliance and undead dark elves for the Horde would make way more sense than the Skyborne
WoW Forever was sold as staying true to the Azeroth we know from Vanilla. So why is the new race a group of blue elves nobody had ever heard of?
The lore Blizzard gave us is that the Skyborne descend from the Highborne of Eldre'Thalas, spent centuries in the elemental plane of air, and slowly started turning blue over the last few generations. That's a lot of new backstory invented just to justify a new skin color.
The thing is, Vanilla already had everything needed for a better option:
- High elves were already in the world. Quel'Danil Lodge, Alliance remnants, elves serving in Stormwind and Ironforge. The Alliance has had a lore reason to play them since 2004.
- Highborne already live in Eldre'Thalas. Dire Maul is right there. If you want a race tied to that city, the Shen'dralar are sitting in it.
- Undead elves like the dark rangers make perfect sense for the Forsaken. Sylvanas herself is one. The Forsaken already recruit from fallen Quel'Thalas.
Any of these would have fit Vanilla's tone and look without ripping assets from Shadowlands and Dragonflight or inventing a new branch of elves from scratch. And putting the one new race behind a $30 purchase with no way to earn it in game makes it feel even more like a cash grab.
Blizzard even said they considered playable high elves starting in Northshire but it didn't feel right. Honestly, what feels less right than blue elves from the sky?
Which race would you rather have seen?
