Gen X, I am older Gen Z and need some advice

Advice & Support

my Gen X mom has not been in my life since I was a child unfortunately, so I would really appreciate any life advice, encouragement, or wisdom from people who are around the same age as her and whom have raised Gen Z and have a closer understanding of the broader societal changes we are facing. Thank you.

my company was acquired by PE into a company that is huge on ai automations and tech. they started bringing in multiple big wigs from competitor companies, as the ai platforms were being trained up.

i was brought into operations prior to all of this, but my role has degraded as ai has progressed and ive been boxed out of having my hands on the new protocols and SOPs. i see my coworkers having meetings daily about training opportunities, automating their reporting, etc, and ive never been included despite asking. im getting the cold shoulder. people are very cagey with me, it feels like a one way flow of information. i am told i do great work, but i know if that were true, i wouldn't have been phased out like this. my leadership team has given me no feedback, despite seeking it. ive been cut out of ALL client facing meetings the past 4-6 mos. told by leadership that people will be left behind, and theyve made hints that i am not "in the family" the way that other tenured employees are (i am not a veteran here). i know others are just worried about their own roles, but it really hurts, because i helped build the prompts and data and context that trained the automation systems. i had a pure execution role that never evolved into strategy or higher level work, despite desperately wanting to. i went from hero to zero, and this has burned me out like no other.

i felt like i was being quiet fired for a long time, but with AI its really sped up over the past few months. i never even felt safe enough in my role to take pto. i haven't taken pto in over a year, and i regularly stayed late and work 9-10 hr days. my loyalty (stupid me) never got me anywhere, except to be sidelined and used and gaslit and lied to about the direction of the company and my role. what's really sad is i feel that had i asserted more boundaries, i actually would have escalated them exiting me, since one of the only ways ive been able to provide value as my role has degraded has been to always be available and responsive.

im very scared i wont be finding another hybrid/remote job ever again, and my health issues have progressed to the point where i cannot work full time 40 hrs in an office. hybrid is doable, remote is doable (even more than 40hrs), but these jobs are going away. i am also disfigured and my appearance looks unwell due to my illnesses. this job had provided a much needed "accommodation" of not having to commute daily (incredibly taxing on my health/sleep) nor have to disclose my medical issues and every appt ive had to go to, unlike an in-office job.

i am terrified of what is next. this role took me 4,000 applications and years after college to obtain. i worked very hard in college, and worked through school to pay for it. the worst part of this is i don't know how to break this cycle again, it was a miracle of the universe i got something at all. i can't see myself finding this type of role again, and even if i did, im terrified it will degrade just like this, or i'll be excluded again, or it won't allow for financial independence. I'm lucky to have a roof over my head at my dads house, but i've never ever tasted the freedom of independent living space due to high costs, nor the broader milestones of adulthood in my 20s due to the economy and job instability. i feel so bad for him as he has lost his 50s supporting his adult Gen Z kids. I desperately hoped to be out of the house by now, and in a stable career. i haven't been able to date with the job instability and my health issues. i feel so stuck, and now i feel i lost my last and only chance. ive been applying for months to other roles, including low salaried 40k roles and not getting interviews at all - which wasn't the case in 2023-2024.

im sick that i will be losing my health insurance, as i am on multiple immune medications that cost thousands of dollars per month, for a very painful chronic condition.

i feel broken.
