Ending theory
I’ve never read the Green Lantern comics. I’ve really enjoyed the show, so I’ve been reading up on parallax. So, I’ve taken my “research,” as well as what I know about language arts, to construct an ending. Again, I don’t know enough about source material, so I could be off. Also, I don’t know how they’d have time for this.
Parallax has already been here inside Jordan. This is why yellow is included everywhere (according to show runners too). This happened sometime shortly after 2006 which is why he never uploaded his conscience again, for fear that parallax would become part of the ring. Parallax has never manifested in Hal because Hal has literally been fearless, so it stays at bay…until John.
Training John started Hal on a path to fear because losing the ring was the first time he’s been afraid of something. Then, the disaster of Rushville caused that to grow, releasing parallax inside himself. You could see how he was afraid bc of the way he set up the gun in his house. Instead of losing Coast City like in the comics, it was losing Rushville and the guilt that triggered everything. Sinestro promised to help rid him of it, so he released him, but Sinestro just wanted to harness it and use Hal.
Hal knew what was happening and has a battle within himself where parallax wants to take over, but John also has the reigns. When he started telling John at the diner that John was afraid, that was parallax. His voice even becomes a bit sinister. But when John hit him, it snapped him back to himself, and he made the plan to kill himself to rid parallax for good. That’s why he tells John not to tell anyone. He thinks highly of John bc John did have the willpower to face his fear when he got rid of the ring. John’s fear, as told in the last episode, was disappointing his parents. He faced that fear when he gave the ring away. That’s why a certain part of Hal respects him.
Also, Hal didn’t just kill himself, he talked Kerry into doing it by mentioning her son. We saw her shoot at him already when she told him she was thinking about her son. This was on the road that had the yellow flowers on each side of the road, and those flowers were BUTTERCUPS, Kerry’s nickname from Hal. It’s a clue. He actually used parallax to make her afraid, knowing it would cause her to shoot him, so he is right on both counts: he killed himself but Kerry also killed him. It’s also a loophole for not killing.
Now, I’m just trying to figure out why the blackmail storyline is even in there. It seems like it should be connected. Maybe when Hal was going around knocking on doors, he was collecting followers. That girl did have a Tweety Bird (yellow) watch. Idk. That’s also a bird…and birds are also an important symbol.
It’s fun to think of these things even if it’s totally wrong.
