Couch co-op confusion

How do you play with a couch buddy and each get to be your favorite character. This seems like an obvious thing and I can’t figure it out. When one person signs in, any other players can only be guests or clones, they can’t use their own build. What’s going on? I’m on a Switch 1 if that matters.
