I watched a yoga student come to the studio, give the instructor a cash gift, and leave without staying for class. After class, I asked her if she felt comfortable walking to her car alone. AIO?

Something happened at my yoga studio tonight that I can't ignore, and I’m curious how other people would percieve this.

I was originally supposed to take the 6 p.m. class but missed it by literally a couple of minutes, so I went and got something to eat and came back for the 7:15 class instead.

While I was waiting outside for the studio to reopen, a man I’ve seen there before showed up. I don’t know him personally. We recognized each other enough to exchange the awkward white person grin to acknowledge eachothers existence, but we didn’t speak. He’s always struck me as pretty reserved, and socially disinterested.

The odd thing was that he wasn’t dressed for yoga at all. He was wearing jeans/street clothes. So, when the door opened, he went straight up to the instructor at the desk. He handed her some cash and said something along the lines of, “Here’s some money. Use it for gas or whatever.”

She seemed genuinely surprised and immediately said something like, “Oh wow, oh my gosh, you really don’t need to do that.”

He basically said it was fine, and hurriedly left.

He didn't stay for class and apparently he didn’t owe her money for a previous class or anything like that either. He had just specifically come to the studio, handed her money, and left.

What made it even stranger was that the instructor seemed surprised enough by it that she started explaining herself to me because I was right there to witness the exchange. She basically said she didn’t know why he had done it, that he absolutely didn’t have to, and explained that she didn’t want me thinking she was doing something she shouldn’t be doing. She also acknowledged that, yes, she could use the money, but the gesture itself came out of the blue.

For the record, I do not think the instructor was doing anything shady. Her reaction and shock actually made me think she was just as caught off guard as I was, and she had mentioned she wondered if he received her friendliness for flirting by mistake at some point.

But the whole interaction pinged something in my brain. I don't inherently think there is anything wrong with people helping each other out. I wish the world were more giving and kind on a regular basis.

At the same time, unsolicited money can sometimes come with expectations, whether those expectations are stated or not, and the fact that he specifically came in just to give it to her and immediately leave felt unusual.

I’m not planning to interfere, confront anybody, or play detective... but she wasn't prepared or remotely comfortable with the interaction. Maybe he's socially inept and awkward, but it could also be a boundary test, could it not?

Would this interaction have registered as strange to anyone else, or am I reading too much into it?
