Regional Theater to Broadway
This summer, I saw the premiere of Dave Malloy’s Black Swan musical at the American Repertory Theater. This was my first experience at a Regional Theater of this caliber.
Not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about this show. I was blown away, I think it was one of the best things I’ve ever seen on stage. The EFFECTS. The CHOREOGRAPHY. It truly had my jaw on the floor from start to finish.
That being said, since I’m new into the regional theater development of musicals pipeline, I’m curious about the timeline. Obviously there’s no promise that this show will end up on Broadway or even Off-Broadway, but what is a likely timeline? I do think some of the lyrics and book need some work before it’s ready to hit the stage again. How long is typical for a show to undergo rewrites before there’s word on it again? Will it likely undergo more staged versions before possibly making it to NYC?
I know that Florence Welch’s Gatsby debuted at A.R.T. and it kind of went silent since… I really hope that doesn’t happen with this show.
Thoughts?
