Why we now report Google AI Mode and Gemini as two separate engines in every client audit

Google AI Mode and Gemini get tracked as two separate engines in our client audits now, not as one Google surface.

The reason is a May 2026 study of 153,425 citations across 5,000 queries that found AI Mode and Gemini share only 4.66% of their cited domains. Same parent company, same model family, almost no overlap in the pages they actually cite. If your AI visibility report blends them into one Google number, it is hiding more than it reveals.

That one finding changed our process in three ways. First, citation monitoring is per platform with separate targets, because a page cited in AI Mode has almost no predictive value for Gemini. Second, our sentence-level diagnostics moved to Gemini exclusively, since Google quietly dropped the #:~:text= fragment from AI Mode citations (70.9% coverage in March 2026 down to 0% in May) while Gemini coverage rose to 84.1%. Third, our content briefs now require the key claim in the top third of the page as one atomic sentence under 18 words, because the same study found cited sentences cluster at a mean position of 37% of the page with a median length of 10 words, and nothing longer than 18 words was cited once in the whole dataset.

The honest footnote we share with clients: another study from July 2026, run by the AI-visibility platform CiteLens on 320 commercial buyer queries, found AI Mode pulling 93% of citations from Google's top-10, which conflicts with the 22.5% URL overlap in this study. We present both and explain the likely cause, different query universes, and the vendor relationship, rather than picking the number that flatters the pitch.

SEO gets you indexed, AEO gets you cited. The new wrinkle is that which AI surface is doing the citing decides which format wins. There is no single playbook here. There are six different rulebooks on one query set.
