Just finished the series “The Veil” - A short review

Spoiler

Whoever wrote this took a wild wide swing and caught at least a part of the ball. Wasn’t a home run but they get mad props for the attempt.

The fact none of it was predictable already gives it high marks. This wasn’t a typical espionage tale.

It took me two attempts to get through it. The first time I lost interest after the first episode. Wasn’t that it was particularly bad or boring. It was too convoluted for me at first.

Elizabeth Moss’ British accent was good I think - although being Canadian I don’t have a solid reference by which to judge her. Perhaps a Brit could weigh in here.

But still, every time she said anything that accent was jarring and took me out of the story.

I don’t know if we were ever told how she lost her baby. Maybe she revealed it and I missed it.

At first I liked her Violet/Imogen character, as she had all of these subtle smiles or twinkles in her eye. But then she still gave them even as she was getting sad or worried - and that made her difficult to read.

The twists and turns culminating in the big reveal about Michael and ultimately her dad at the end were compelling. >!Didn’t like how her dad drove off and we were left listening to her talk to the open air as if she was talking to him. Felt contrived and slightly lazy.!<

It also felt like Moss was being highlighted for some reason. “See? Here’s how a great actor performs a monologue, kids.” And the final scene where she sort of winks at us when asking for her new name. An “I’ll be back” hint if ever there was one. Felt way too self-aggrandizing.

The character is quite good but not enough for a James (Jane?) Bond sort of franchise.

I’d give it an 8 out of 10. But I wouldn’t watch it a second time.
