An article about The Koala, a really crappy student paper from UCSD, made the New York times.

It's really only still around at sdsu, as a student there I have of course been handed a few and read through them and I can say with confidence that it is basically as trashy as the article makes it out to be. The low-brow content may be good for a few laughs if one is in the right mood and doesn't take it personally or seriously but it is generally filled with crap that has very few, if any, redeeming qualities. It certainly can be quite offensive and the writing is fairly poor, the editing worse, since it is usually full of grammatical and spelling errors. But what does one expect from an independent paper created by a group of students from sdsu who are clearly not the best nor brightest given their enjoyment in putting out the type of content,(if it could even be called that), that is in the koala. I guess it's a good thing that I see more copies of the paper in the trash than I see being read around campus.
"This is not highbrow journalism, but we are still trying to do something substantial."
lol
Mr. Liddle swears his protégés are not filled with misogyny or racial animus — about half of the 25 or so staff members are women, and a handful are Asian- or Mexican-American.
Uh, what? Women and racial minorities have the ability to perpetuate racism and sexism. It isn't institutionalized, but that doesn't excuse it.
It's at SDSU and a few other schools as well.
It's called free speech.
If you aren't familiar with The Koala, it's an unfunny comedy newspaper which originated from UCSD. In the 90's it used to be really funny. Now it's just bad. Really, really bad. It's like if you gave a bunch of mentally damaged middle-schoolers a typewriter and a pencil and told them to make the grossest newspaper possible. They try to be as offensive as possible, but manage to not be funny at all.
Most of the people who wrote for The Koala at UCSD were huge douchebags, at least when I went there.
sounds about right circa 2005-2009
I too remember when /b/ was good
I recall them getting in the news occasionally for racist material.
Yeah, at this point it seems to be pretty much just trying to provoke the university into doing something that would let them sue. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was backed by some sleazy lawyer.
