What is Drill?
Drill is a Sub Genre of Hip-Hop, originating from Southside Chicago, in a Woodlawn neighbor called “Dro City” although lower West Side and Lower East sides of the city contribute. “Pacman Dro” from “Dro City” is credited with the creation of the drill movement. Drill is defined as Grim, Violent and extremely trap influenced (Because its pretty much Trap with less focus on drugs and more focus on Violence). Drill has emerged as Chicago's defining sound much like Boom Bap is the East Coast's defining sound or G-Funk is the West Coast's defining sound. Drill is still a relatively new genre, going only as far back as 2010.
Drill is also slang for retaliate or fight but can be used to mean things like having a war on the streets.
Why the name Chiraq?
Chicago got the name "Chiraq Drillinois" for two things. First, "Chiraq" comes from the fact that more murders happen in Chicago then parts of Iraq. The second part, "Drillinois" comes from the fact that Chicago is located in the State of Illinois. It is also where Drill emerged thus the name "Drillinois".
Gangs
To understand the music you have to understand some of what's happening in Chicago. Basically, in Southside, gangs run rampant. This is caused by a long history of violence (Chitown was pretty much run by gangsters in the 60s). As of now, male adults are MOSTLY either dead or locked up in prison, meaning the children there grow up with a "single mother" and no father. The majority of these children also drop out of school at a young age. These kids end up being raised by the streets and acting off whatever they see around them, like most children do. However, because what's around them is violence and drug related, that is how they act and what they know. So, you now have a lot of kids without fathers to "teach" them how to "grow up properly", running around the streets with their homies with guns and a lot of drugs. These kids are also part of gangs. The most prominent gangs being the BDs or Black Disciples and GDs or Gangster disciples. Another gang are the Almighty Black P. Stone Nation. Neither of these two gangs (BD & GD) like each other, at all. Throw the fact that these 2 gangs will shoot other members on sight and the fact that both gangs have an abundance of guns and you now have a huge gang problem fueled by hate, drugs and violence. This is the large reason Chicago has a high murder rate, because of the gang violence.
How did Drill get to be this big?
Great question! (Even know you didn't fucking ask). Drill started off, mainly, from an artist named "King Louie".
King Louie
This is the dude who pretty much popularized the Genre. He’s from He rapped with a lady named "Impressive" whom he met in his freshman year of high school. These two started off rapping like anyone else trying to get big would, by rapping and making a name for themselves locally. Louie would be hustlin, handing out tapes any chance he could, school, bus stops, parties, shit like that. He has been making music since 2007. He eventually released music videos along with his songs on Youtube which helped him get a larger and wider following. His first song released on Youtube with a video was I'm Arrogant, the leading single for his mixtape MAN UP OR BAND UP. This pretty much sparked Louie's fast growth. King Louie's tape "Drilluminati" is seen as one of the best tapes to come out of the Drill scene and includes features such as Juicy J & Pusha T.
Chief Keef
Around the same time Louie was getting big, Keef started getting bigger. He reportedly starting rapping at 5 using a karaoke machine his aunt owned and used blank tapes to record. (lol). Keef had several songs out by the time he was 16 including some REALTRAPSHIT such as: Bang, Itz Crackin and John Madden. These were all made while Keef was on house arrest at his grandma's house or some time before that. He was put under house arrest for pointing a loaded gun at police officers. He served 3 months in a youth prison prior to his probation at his grandmother's house. During this time he also dropped I Don't Like, a HUGE factor to why Keef blew up. (Id link the explicit video but them fuccbois @ youtube took it down). This song was eventually remixed by the man himself Kanye West. THIS is definitely the reason Keef, and the drill scene as a whole really blew up. Keef later appeared on Kanye's recent masterpiece called "Yeezus", featured on the song "Hold My Liquor". King Louie also landed a feature on Yeezus, featured on the song "Send It Up".
Those 2 artists are the sole reason Drill is what it is today. Without Kanye's remix of "I Don't Like" or him cosigning both of the "main" Drill artists, the sub genre would not have blown up as much as it did as fast as it did.
Cliques
Chitown has a lot of different cliques involved in Drill. The most prominent one is GBE. There is also FBG, Bricksquad 069, MUBU GANG, OTF, 600, 300, and a fuck ton more.
GBE
GBE stands for Glory Boys Entertainment. It WAS a label made by Keef to put on his homies, however, it's been disbanded and split into 2 parts. Savage Squad Records, or SSR, ran by Fredo Santana and Glo Boys, Ran by Keef. Everyone in Glo Boys or SSR are either 300 or 600. I'll get into the different artists later down this long ass thing.
GBE & OTF are both 300 BDs, though some members of OTF are 600 BDs.
Glo Boys includes the following artists:
Capo
Chief Keef
Ballout
Tadoe
Blood Money (RIP BIG GLO) (Also Keefs Cousin)
Tray Savage.
|SSR includes|:
Fredo Santana (Keef's cousin)
SD
Gino Marley
Bosstop
CDAI (#FREE22SHOTZ)
OTF stands for Only The Family and is Lil Durk's clique of homies. He's thinking of making OTF into a label. OTF MEMBERS INCLUDE:
Lil Durk
Lil Reese
Rondonumbanine (#FREERONDO)
OTF NuNu
There are a lot of artists who rep OTF600 such as Keef and Fredo however it gets a little complicated as to who is part of OTF and who is not. For example Keef use to put on OTF and shout OTF out all the time but no longer does as he and Durk have beef. Nothing serious though.
FBG (Fly Boy Gang) are GDs and Insane BDs (BDs who have defected and become part of GDs) from St. Lawrence 063 aka Tookaville aka Tutu Gang. They are also part of CloutBoyz Ent. a label headed by member Lil Jay#00. They also use numbers to identify themselves by. Why Numbers? Because in "Chiraq" numbers are used to identify shooters. Names of famous basketball players are also used.
FBG members include:
Lil Jay #00
Ca$hout 063
FBG Duck #3
Billionaire Black
Young Mello aka YoungGoDumb
Dutchie
Beaski CloutShooter
The Late Lil Jeff #99
These 2 cliques are the biggest cliques out of the Drill Scene. There are a few more I'll start to get into later into this long ass thing. Now that you know how Drill came to be and Chicago's violent pass, I can get into individual artists. SKEDDIT
END PART 1
E: Couple people are saying this isnt really "underground drill". I mean its not but theres too many artists to touch on if we going by less popular. So this is pretty much like a introduction to Drill for anyone who doesnt know and sheds light on a few of the more popular Drill artists. Only 3 Drillers dropped albums and thats Fredo, Keef and Lil Mouse
E2: Added a couple tapes and touched it up more
