Question about deadlines for grad school

Hey guys! I looked in the grad school thread to answer my question, but I didn't see this question asked.

I'll be applying for PhD programs in the fall and I want your guys' take on the deadlines that some programs have. Some of the deadlines are in early December and some are in early January.

Would it hurt my application to wait until this next semester is over to apply to the programs who have a deadline in early January? I'd hopefully be able to raise my GPA a tad and show that I am proficient in stats classes, but I'm worried programs will think I'm lazy for waiting to apply until the last minute.
