DIY Analog E-Nail How-To
If you are reading this, there is a good chance you have also seen my Digital DIY E-Nail How-To. Now its time for an analog version!
READ ME - Before I start the how-to, I must start with some disclaimers ;).
- This is clearly a direct copy/rip off of D-Nail's Analog E-Nail. Major props to D-Nail for pioneering this design. I'm not the first to rip off Brian's design ;).
- I take NO responsibility for what you do after reading this. It's not my fault if you burn yourself or your shit.
- If you fuck up your coil, dimmer or any other parts, its on you! I can't be responsible for your fail wiring or soldering.
- I am no expert on any of this shit. I am sure I did plenty wrong. Google is your friend and I am an idiot. Keep that in mind!
- I am open to suggestions for ways to improve the design. Thats what this thread is for!
- I'm not gonna go into crazy detail. If you have any questions, ask. I want to get people on the right track without detailing every single connection. If this seems complicated, buy a D-Nail analog unit!
BUILD
- I started with a Lutron dimmer. http://imgur.com/kAG2VOc
- And an old lamp cord I found in my shed. http://imgur.com/gcG62kn
- Next I soldered one end of the lamp cord to PINS 1 and 2 of a 5-pin female XLR connector. http://imgur.com/r0QLwMZ
- After finishing up the connector, I cut the remaining cord down to about 10 inches. http://imgur.com/iBleygk
- Next I pulled out the dimmer, flip it over and pull the two plugs out.
- Now I can insert my lamp cord. Push the cord all the way in. Top goes to the XLR I just soldered. Bottom goes to the wall plug I left on the end of the cable. http://imgur.com/b5pAzjS
- Press the two tabs in into the dimmer to terminate the wires and finish the build. http://imgur.com/bEGUnzr
- All done and ready to rock! http://imgur.com/FVCpoOY
PARTS LIST
*Lutron Dimmer - $10.52
*Lamp Cord - $4.91
*XLR Female - $10.52
Heater Coil - $75.98
Ti Nail - $80.00
FINAL THOUGHTS
- I'll be honest, I only built this to satisfy my curiosity. I only tested it enough to know it gets the coil hot. I didn't even take a dab off it. I have MY DIGITAL UNITS so its more than useless to me.
- If someone else builds one, report back and let me/us know how it works with actual use.
- I was actually really surprised how stupid easy this was to build. I was expecting to have to solder some wires inside the dimmer... nope, a 5 year old could do it. The instructions that come with the dimmer are about all you need.
