/r/BestOf Subscriber Feedback Thread, Part 2

Hello again. Approximately 1 month ago r/bestof ran a low-key feedback poll designed to flesh out the concerns which exist regarding the future of r/bestof in our post-default status era.

Based on that feedback thread and our own internal deliberations, we have hit upon the following adjustments which will be implemented shortly. Below are the highlights of the plan:

  • by popular request, r/bestof submissions will be asked to use the No Participation or ".np" prefix in their submission's URL. This measure will help to mitigate the "bestof" effect in subreddits which have implemented the np css. In brief, the easiest way to submit a comment using np in the prefix is to click or tap on the "permalink" button below a given comment, and after the direct link to the comment loads, copy the URL in the address bar. (Alternately you can simply right click the "permalink" button and select copy link address.) After you have the URL copied, navigate to the r/bestof sidebar and click/tap "submit a link." You will be taken to this screen. At that point, you can fill in your title. Paste the copied URL into the field entitled "URL." Now delete the "www" protocol and instead type "np" before the .reddit.com. Don't forget to add "?context=3" at the end of the URL, to help the people reading your submission understand the context of the comment. Now scroll down and hit "submit." You have now posted an acceptable submission to r/bestof.

  • Self Posts are now acceptable for submission to r/bestof. To clarify, what this means is that a self-post submission from another subreddit can now be linked to via r/bestof. So yes, AMA's are now allowed again! User overview links (/u/soupyhands for example) and subreddit links (/r/bestof for example) are not acceptable submissions.

  • After a long deliberation, we feel that since there are currently 50 default subreddits, our former policy of restricting comments to non-default subreddits is too restrictive. Therefore we will once again be allowing comments from virtually all of reddit. There are some exceptions, as some subreddits have requested to not be meta-linked and we honor their request. In other cases subreddit have been restricted as they have been deemed detrimental to the nature of r/bestof. We have decided that comment submissions from r/Askreddit will also be restricted, as the nature of that subreddit lends a great deal of visibility to the comments posted there, and it is the perception that crossposting r/Askreddit comments to r/bestof will harm the ability of this subreddit to highlight content which has not already been viewed. In other words, the flood of r/Askreddit submissions was the main reason the community decided to disallow default subreddit comments here two years ago. Whether r/AskReddit comments remain restricted will depend on the feedback we get from r/bestof subscribers.

That pretty much covers the changes. As you can see, the new r/bestof is going to be a lot like the old r/bestof. We hope you approve of this revision, and we would invite your comments and feedback prior to the implementation of these changes.

Thanks for your time.
