I am sad that the LFTR is not on this list.
Thorium is a technology project that could make a difference in the whole energy debate, I think fusion and solar power take up most of the excitement talk at the moment.
I think we should consider all great projects like this.
Overlooked: I do not think that word means what they think it means.
And neither do they, given the explanations of all the growth and development those technologies are experiencing.
The worst that could be said of them is that they aren't experiencing instantaneous worldwide deployment, but that has always been the case. Technologies need time to proliferate.
But what if they didn't? What if, at some point, an infrastructure were in place to allow almost instantaneous adoption of nearly any new technology worldwide?
I think more attention should be paid to 3d printing. In the context of the Futurist party, policies should be considered so as not to interfere with the development of the technology, and ideally to encourage it in both advancement and adoption. Tax law, intellectual property, and education all have a substantial bearing on 3d printers.
Saturation of advanced 3D printing capability would entail prodigious gains in personal and community independence, enable the fastest possible adoption of new technical advances, and radically reduce resource consumption as a result of requiring less transport and no overproduction.
Technology, used correctly, can change all our lives radically for the better!
We need to collect the best ideas here, and choose wisely what existing projects or projects we can inspire that can truly make a difference.
What projects do you think we should know about or endorse?
What projects would you like us to think about pursuing?
You can endorse the future by helping us right here and now!
I, for one, believe the GNU Operating System to be a project that will improve our lives. Their aim is to create an operating system that respects your freedom, as defined here. I feel that we should not just pursue freedom in the physical world, but we need to pursue freedom in the often-neglected digital world. Doing so helps bring freedom into the digital realm, serving us in multiple ways, including those practical and not. We need to raise this issue with more people, since a large portion of our population is not aware of these concerns.
The free software movement, which GNU is largely part of, differs, however, from the open-source movement, which believes that software freedom serves to benefit people from a practical standpoint. The free software movement, however, aims to do so from a philosophical and political standpoint that says that such freedom is more a necessity and a right (practicality is treated more like a side-benefit). The difference is essentially between freedoms being considered a practical thing to have or a right and necessity that we should have regardless of the circumstances, be they practical or not. (I personally prefer the goals of the free software movement.) The GNU Operating System serves as a way to help us achieve freedom in the computer world.
I happen to agree with you that we need to look at how projects benefit us as human beings from a philosophical standpoint. Humanity needs to grow up as a collective and develop a mature sense of themselves. In the meantime it is people like you and I who will draw attention to it.
I need to figure out a way to organize these projects for the Futurist Party better so that we can continue to discuss them.
I am someone who shares your opinion that free software can help change the world. One of my favorite speculative fiction books called the "Truth Machine" by James Halperin discussed how powerful software can actually have a strong social impact.
I am surprised that we do not have more philosophical talk here, but most of us are interesting in getting to the point of direct action. I think the key here is careful organization.
Care do join our conversation here? I will do everything I can to support GNU. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts!
