Should I do videos on something completely different than video games?

I did a search to see what people have said before about doing vlogs on the same channel and everyone that I have seen give input has said that it is good to actually have a face and all that stuff to keep viewers updated. That is all good stuff but I want to do some vlog/produced videos and the subject will be music(to put it broadly) so I dont really know how it applies.

Should I have a separate channel for my vlog type videos?

The pluses to having a separate channel that I have come up with.

  • I can keep the subject matter separate so that I dont have games mixed with music vlogs

  • as a result of having a channel for one topic viewers may not be confused or have some other non desirable reaction to seeing my feed of uploaded videos.

  • it will be easier to track analytics. Not much since I can sort my data all sorts of ways but there will be clear numbers for subs, views, etc. without any extra work.

The negatives that I have come up with.

  • Do I have a separate twitter account for both? If I dont have separate accounts how would people see that?

  • I am probably going to have to start another account. I dont really know if I have to do this or not.

  • An extra step to uploading content since I would have to go to different channels.

  • it could be a bit more difficult to have audience interaction when I am juggling channels.

I am leaning towards just doing it on one channel and letting viewers deal with it however they want. It is my channel after all. On the other hand, I dont really have a problem doing different channels.

Keep it together. You have plenty of work ahead of you with one channel ;)

I know that I am getting pretty ambitious right now. I just had a wild urge and an idea this afternoon.

Maybe it is all of the free time that I have since I dont have to worry about college for the time being.

Don't get me wrong, there have been a few times I have considered another channel myself - it can be appealing for a number of reasons.

The thing is (from my perspective), I enjoy channels with some variety. Those that have some LP vids, but also do some cam time for updates, or do food videos... or music... I find it to be a nice change of pace, while also giving me new insight into the personality behind the camera. Often times, we are watching a channel because of the person behind the camera, and so making us go to different locations for content is an extra burden we won't all take on.

That said, if the content is drastically different enough, or if you are large enough that people will follow you anywhere, I think it is less of an issue to split things up a bit - but again, this is just my perspective - my opinion ;)

You are saying things that I was already thinking and putting new things into my brain. This is why I asked what people thought. Thank You.

I do agree with what you are saying as well. I am being pushed further to sticking to one channel.

Actually I think it largely depends on figuring out what people expect from you, if you've been doing Vlogs and Let's Plays together from the start, then it will probably be ok to keep going on that way, but if you've only been doing let's plays and suddenly start posting Vlogs too, then it may discourage people who have come to your channel only for let's plays, it that respect a second channel might be advisable.

The problem with this is that you are hindering change and potentially growth.

Should he look at the 119 subscribers he has right now, and determine (pretending he can do that with any accuracy) what they expect, and then never deviate from that? What about when he hits 500 subscribers - what about those newer 381?

I imagine you were not taking such a strict stance, and instead were imagining it would be an ongoing thing - that he would essentially take the temperature of his audience from time to time and determine how to proceed, but this is promoting the idea that we should only do what it is our audience expects, as they expect it. This could be a good model for keeping current viewers happy, but one of the lessons taken from the most successful channels out there is that growth is aided by change - by bringing in new content, and new forms of expression versus remaining stagnant because of expectations. Remember that growing/changing does not have to mean the ending of previous forms of content enjoyed by the majority.

but if you've only been doing let's plays and suddenly start posting Vlogs too, then it may discourage people who have come to your channel only for let's plays, it that respect a second channel might be advisable.

It certainly "may" discourage some, but channels with a variety of content are doing just fine. Their viewers come for the bits they like and can easily avoid the things they are not into. I would much prefer a subscriber skipping some of my vlogs (for example) than to never introduce anything new and miss out on the chance at continuing to bring in more viewers - to diversify and try new things, etc.

I actually did mean that he should check what his subscribers want regularly, but I did explain it badly, so I apologise. I'll also admit that I tend not to think of subscribers as picking and choosing sometimes, which is obvious to me now, but until it was said to me never even occurred to me. :-O

I was thinking about this today, the way I see it as long as the video isn't supposed to be a contained story (ARGs like Marble Hornets for instance) you might as well only have one channel, keeping everything in one spot and not having multiple channel just makes more sense when it comes to subscribers/views/fanbase

But my vlogs(I dont have a better label for them) are going to be totally about music. Nothing related to gaming in any way.

Keeping everyone in one place is what I am trying to keep in mind. I am trying to take into consideration the viewer and myself.

well, the thing is, they subscribed to you for you, not because you play games and that's all, honestly I think that it's a lot better to be more well rounded, keeping things separate makes your stuff hard to find for the people in your viewership that would like that music vlog goodness

That is a good point a large part of why I make videos is so that people watch them(Even though nobody does).

Exposing viewers who came for one thing to the others that I do can only be good.

exactly, weird how you posted this the day that I was thinking about why Tobuscus has 800 channels, seriously Tobuscus, why?

Keep everything on one channel. I hate having to go on multiple accounts, that's what playlists are for.

I say keep it all on one channel. The people that really like you will watch all of it, and the people only interested in one type of video will only watch those.
