Prog Album of the Week - Week 47 (07/21/2014): Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

Discussion

As always, we encourage participation from everyone - if you've never heard the album, there's a YouTube link provided! Go check it out and report back!

Welcome to the forty-seventh week of r/progrockmusic's Album of the Week! Last week we discussed Procol Harum's Procol Harum and that was lovely.

If you'd like to peruse previous weeks' discussions, please visit the archive.

One of many 70's "long songs", this one's about as adventurous as TAAB, albeit in very different ways...

###Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973)

Track Listing:

Track listing: 1) Tubular Bells, pt. 1; 2) Tubular Bells, pt. 2.

####Potential Discussion Questions:

  • So good old Mike played just about every instrument on this thing, which at the time was pretty inventive and revolutionary. Less session musicians = more unified sound? Or does that stifle creativity?

  • How would you personally rate the album?

  • Are there any moments on the album you consider particularly strong or particularly weak (i.e., favourite/least favourite moments)?
