where to get Lane 1Q in germany / newbie tobacco recommendations

I'm a brand new pipe smoker. Thanks to this community for being kind and helpful!

I heard Lane 1Q is very nice and has that "delicious pipe tobacco" smell and taste. My local tabac (tabakmeier.com) seems to carry about 10 major brands but no Lane 1Q, is that because 1Q is not as "high end" as others?

Does anyone know a place to order pipe tobacco online with shipping to Germany? Many places will ship to Germany but it gets stuck in customs and you have to go to this place on the outskirts of town and pay the extra tax, and they treat you like a criminal. I'm looking for a shop which handles the tax for you.

I'm also looking for some tobacco recommendations. Browsing TobaccoReviews.com and here I found some candidates:

Lane Limited - 1-Q
McClelland - Frog Morton or Frog Morton's Cellar
Peterson - Old Dublin
W.O. Larsen - Signature Vintage Mixture

What do you think of this list for a newbie? The WO Larsen is a bit controversial but the others seem pretty solid and popular examples of their types.

Thanks!

Ahem, Lane's tobaccos are not sold in Europe, but I wouldn't bother ordering stuff like 1Q all the way from the US. They have good tobacco manufacturers, but in my opinion Lane is not one of them. It's like ordering cases of Budweiser to Germany, a country which makes fine beers.

I checked out your local selection and it pretty damn good. You have Rattray's, Samuel Gawith, Peterson's, Dunhill, etc. Many John Aylesbury's blends are excellent, too. A friend always brings me a tin of John Aylesbury Own Mixture when he travels to Berlin. One of the best latakia blends I've smoked. Old Dublin is a good latakia blend, too. Larsen's Signature is a quality aromatic and a good choice.

I'm in Finland and order from Germany, UK and US, because our selection here is really poor.

Thanks for the budweiser analogy, that makes a lot of sense.

I guess I just have to sample all the options

Hey man, welcome!

Lane 1-Q...personally, I think you'd be better off starting with the Frog Morton or the W.O. Larsen. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that 1-Q is bad, but for being one of the worldwide best sellers (I think that's right) it sure hasn't knocked my socks off.

Thank you! That helps. I won't worry about not being able to find it.

What is the difference between Frog Morton and Frog Morton's Cellar?

Humm...how to describe this. Frog Morton is a sub-brand, I suppose? McClelland is the manufacturer. They make the "Frog Morton" tobacco line...which has Frog Morton Cellar, Frog Morton Across the Pond, and Frog Morton On the Town. From what I can tell, plain "Frog Morton" is the base blend for each of these...a tobacco with rave reviews.

Hi there! I'm also new to this subreddit, but have been a pipe smoker for a couple of years now. Imho, recommendations for beginners are nice and all, but you should not only focus on "bestsellers". When I started smoking, the shopkeepers would bombard me with free samples everytime I bought something. That was quite helpful. This way you can experience the wast variety of tobacco without having to buy a whole tin every time (which you eventually don't even like). There is also the possibility, that (in the beginning) you will have difficulties to distinguish between several types of tobacco. After some training you will be able to taste the differences, though. Depending on the complexity of the mixture (and your frequency of smoking, obviously), this process can take some time. Enjoy!

PS.: It is kinda weird to write this in English, even though we are both German...

Give Dan Blue Note a try; it's much better than Lane 1Q and is manufatuered in Germany. Please don't get me wrong, I like Lane 1Q, it has its place; but Dan Blue Note is an aromatic along the same lines but more complexity.

I used to live in Germany. The trick to finding good tobacco there was finding a place that offered enough tobaccos. I remember a lot of the shops/malls had a small selection. But that website you showed had good stuff.

I recommend trying out W.O. Larsen blends for sweeter, really light, smokable tobaccos. I haven't tried one I didn't like, but there are definitely better ones. Since you mentioned tobaccoreviews.com, you already know how to investigate stuff. Just write down your "Top 3" for each brand so that when you go into the shop, you'll have a few options.

As far as British tobaccos, you can't go wrong with Dunhill. Mixture 965 is classic, and if there is a pure British that you would ever enjoy, it'd be that. There are hybrid blends, more lighter smokes, much like the lighter Frog Morton's stuff. But that's best ordered from here, or if you have a friend who comes Stateside, have them pick you up some and bring it back for you.

The rest of the brands and blends, I would just research to find what you may enjoy. It looks like you found a good shop. Definitely enjoy those Danish and English blends while they're so close. And have fun smoking through those.

My friend, To answer your question about the 1-Q, I would give 4noggins a shot. It seems that that always can help the Aussies get around the tax dilemma. And as for the recommendations, while I love good English crossover blends and otherwise, I still think you should give aromatics a try, 1-Q being a staple of those said aromatics. But there is no doubt frog Morton cellar is some good stuff. Happy piping!
