Viking Playthrough?

I've been listening to Amon Amarth lately so I want to make a Viking playthrough. What are some good weapons/armor to use? And how should I play? What guilds should I join?

Edit: Also, what's a good Viking name?

Nord race, Heavy Armor, 2-Handed weapons, join the Companions.

ShasvePC•

Nope, not heavy armor. Light armor like scale or fur fits better. Heavy helmets do make sense though.

anxhelino1234PC•

Vikings didnt wear helmets that much

5
Shoudlaz•

Vikings did wear helmets, all the time

History is much more different than the Vikings TV show there are lots of helmets that historians and archaeologists have dug up

Teusa•

haha yes.. when I think of Viking hat, I think of the type "Hägar" wears.. Horns and stuff ;)

1
Recs6943•

A lot of them also shaved their heads for fear of their hair being grabbed in battle.

1
Callous1970XBOX•

Actually Vikings did wearing heavy armor quite often.

ShasvePC•

Not really the plated knight armor you see in vanilla skyrim. More like the warchief armor from immersive armors.

A simple bloody mail coat, apparently too much to ask, would fit a viking playthrough very well. Also, round shields (without iron banding around it), nasal or ocular helmets (without horns), single handed axes and swords, spears, two-handed axes, bows, knives, etc.

11
Callous1970XBOX•

without horns - exactly! No one would wear that into a real fight.

metalsheep714XBOX•

A guard's shield (as close as you can get in vanilla), a steel helmet, steel nordic boots and gauntlets, a steel sword or axe, and a guardsman's armor from the hold of your choosing. Does that sound about right? Also, carry a longbow and iron arrows in the inventory, as well as an iron dagger.

Oggie243PS3•

Plain steel helmet is pretty much the perfect helmet fornit.

1
albatross49PC•

They were mainly coastal raiders who relied on mobility.

They wore fur and leather.

3
The_Mighty_Rex•

No they didn't it was almost all leather

Heavy armor and two-handed sounds more like a knight to me, but it really all depends on whether you want to play as a historically accurate viking or the heavily romanticized version we see in modern fiction.

u/Shasve already mentioned the armor (they were probably partial to armor that wouldn't guarantee drowning in the event of falling overboard or when crossing rivers), but I think block + one-handed makes much more sense. Raiding without a shield (where the opposing force would most likely have skilled archers defending their position) would pretty much be a suicide mission. The shield wall was a quintessential North Germanic battle tactic for good reason.

Accordingly, Vikings were fond of both one-handed swords and axes, but I doubt maces saw much use in battle relatively speaking.

I'm glad you posted this. It's good to differentiate between movie'd "Viking Barbarians!" and the raiding marine forces the Vikings actually established.

Nord race and a warrior build is all you need tbh. You could choose to go half-naked or use light armor to intimidate others in combat (by psyching others out through the implication that you're too badass to use armor), or heavy armor to look imposing. One-handed or two-handed is up to preference too, Vikings used shields.

Obviously no magic, if you're really strict about that sort of thing, Shouts aside. Get in brawls with everyone you meet too. And guzzle all the mead!

The_Mighty_Rex•

Vikings were very spiritual people, some of there practices were considered magical so minor magic stuff like Fast Heal and Clairvoyance and stuff I think would be acceptable.

12
ebilutionist•

Well, you could just replace that with potions, especially the healing part. Depends on how you'd want to roleplay. My next character will probably be a Shout-oriented fighter.

4
The_Mighty_Rex•

That's a good point. I have 3 characters 2 on Xbox, one on PC. I started each one with the intent to make them have different styles but somehow I end up being very similar with small differences. My first character is a dark elf that is super strong in archery,1 handed, light armor, and average in destruction and sneak. My second is a redgaurd that's high in one handed and archery, decent in light armor and about even with heavy armor, little to no magic and minor sneaking. And I only seem interested in the same quests. I want variety but I can't bring myself to stray away from my favorite stuff.

1
ebilutionist•

Archery is pretty much something everyone uses. Even my spellsword character has decently-leveled archery, not to mention level 75 sneak (no perks added though). Used to play only sneak characters because I loved how I could just creep up to a dragon and murder it with a few backstabs.

Fuck yes, I was just listening to them yesterday.

Nord + 2H axe + light armor.

Immersive Armors mod has some very cool light armors that look a bit heavier for a viking type. Even the awesome Warchief armor has a light variant, though I suggest the Primitive Nord armor with its rad horn helmet for full on viking immersion.

Light armor gives a bonus to stamina regen, and you'll need it while swinging a big axe.

2
ShadyBlades•

vikings didnt have horns in their helmets it's a hollywood concept.

1
BrowncoatShinyPC•

Seriously. Who cares?

2
ShadyBlades•

you don't have to, just if you want to do things right you should consider it (though i think the horns make it more badass even though they're wrong :D)

1
ErlendJPC•

Saying that viking helmets had horns equals saying that we only use 10% of our brain. Fabricated bullshit! C;

0
ShadyBlades•

i wouldnt say its comparable the one has been used several times in big productions that a lot of people have seen. the other, well, you can just think about it for a bit and figure it out :P

Armor - any of the hold guard's armor looks the part. I'd use a steel helmet (no horns), iron boots and maybe hide bracers. They'd use axes and shields - again a hold guard shield would probably look the the best - maybe Morthal's? The Dragonbone Axe looks the closest to the axes vikings used.

Companions for the guild, maybe thieves guild too. Remember, vikings were traders above anything else, so you should invest in speech. Join the Dawnguard for the crossbows.

Erik is a good viking name. Leif too. *actually if you google Leif Ericson, he's wearing a steel helmet from Skyrim.

I'm playing as a valkyrie, and they have list of known names for those. Mine is Kara.

She goes around in heavy armor, sword and shield (I'm keeping my eye on a spear mod that is still in the works), and often judges other people for not being worthy in battle (so Kematu, the redguard who is hunting a supposed traitor hiding in White Run, and who wants me to trick her out, gets killed for his underhanded methods).

She also has the Black Star, to capture the souls of the worthy and prepare them for Ragnorok. They also recharge my sword.

2
LemurLordPC•

Did you play Dawnguard at all? I feel bad using Soul Gems anymore, now that I know they go to Dawnguard Spoiler

1
neonKowPC•

I have not yet, but I look forward to it.

As far as feeling bad about soul gems, a lot of the mythology in the game is somewhat contradictory and details are lost in translations. As far as Kara knows, this is her job, and she believes that is what she is collecting souls for. Also, she's not particularly compassionate about these things. If charging her sword with warriors who've proved themselves in battle doesn't work out, then she will do it with the souls of bandits instead.

2
LemurLordPC•

That's very true, she could have been told that this was her job, not knowing the full truth... it's not like knowledge of how soul gems work is common in-universe.

You think there's gonna be any realization in her future which will change the way the character operates?

I think you've given me my idea for my next character (along the same line as yours), so thanks!

1
neonKowPC•

No idea! We'll see when we get there.

Part of my point was that because of how TES lore works, sometimes the truth of what happened isn't even particularly clear. That might not turn out to be how soul gems work at all. r/teslore has some concepts there that I don't fully grasp, but I think we can assume that, like in a lot of ancient mythology, how things work changes from story to story.

Kara also married Lydia before I found out valkyries were virgins, but I'm going to chalk that up to (1) the definition of virgin being somewhat vague back in the day, and (2) Lydia can carry a lot of loot and follows Kara around everywhere anyway, so it doesn't really change the game that much.

2
cg4lPC•

...and often judges other people for not being worthy in battle

So what happens if you die in battle? Do you delete her and start a new character?

1
neonKowPC•

She doesn't die in battle. I use the sands of time.

2
ebilutionist•

That, my friend, is a very creative way of saying 'reloaded save'. Upvote!

1
NadaramaPS3•

I recommend Bob's Armory for authentic viking swords and not-so-authentic but archetypal viking helmets (it also has authentic ones).

*Oops; sorry, PS3.

But here's this for names: http://www.angelfire.com/wy/svenskildbiter/Viking/viknams3.html

Basically, anything that starts with "Thor" is good.

2
SinistasPC•

Scaled armor, sword & board, Companions.

Here's a Beowulf-inspired build:

2
NeutronizerPC•

I'd suggest use Slavic Music, that's exactly the theme.
Also, the Barbarian Armor from Immersive Armors.

You could either go around the area, questing and killing things, probably joining the companions, or you do an all-out rampage, plundering cities and killing everyone in your path.

1
TheOppoFan•

Shirtless fur armor or stormcloak officer armor is perfect(if your ok with low armor rating)

1
FrisianDude•

It's probably quite possible to get a viking-y name based on your own. Else, go with Beow. Or quite a number of things with 'wulf' and 'ulf'.

1
Langager90PC•

Erik Bjornsson the Nord.

1
RoombaCultist•

It's also okay to go with herbalism as well as regular warrior + light armor build. It's usually thought that vikings got their berserker rage by eating psychoactive substances, mushrooms and the like, to induce a state of rage and fearlessness.

1
EuclidismybroPC•

This is easy man:

Fur related armors, hide, fur, scaled and the like.

Battleaxes and greatswords for weapons.

Companions, companions, companions.

My advice for a name? Hriildar Svekle

1
Catjak56•

Ragnar Lodbrok. Or Johan Hegg? Lead singer of Amon Amarth?

1
Shoudlaz•

I was a Nord and wielded iron weapons, fur armor and a steel shield. You can go steel weapons if you want, and join the Stormcloaks, and do anything related to boats. Buy Hjerim in Windhelm or perhaps the house in Dawnstar if you have Hearthfire, make Dawnstar your hometown since it's adjacent to the sea.

1
Leef_Aaronsen•

Just gonna toss out my favourite armor from my 'Berserker' character. Helm of Yngol is easy to find and worth picking up as a unique item.
