How to run Android apps on Windows, OSX, Linux or Chrome OS:

^Note ^for ^OSX, ^you ^must ^use ^Chrome ^Canary ^with ^the ^64bit ^version ^but ^32bit ^should ^work ^on ^Chrome ^Stable.

  1. Download ARChon Runtime (64-bit/32bit/ARM-based): This is a modified version of the Google Runtime which allows users to run an unlimited number of apps simultaneously. Please note that apks have to be specifically modified to run on the ARChon Runtime. Consult the sheet above to see which APKs have been tested as working.

  2. Unzip the file

  3. Go to chrome://extensions (or navigate to Tools>Extensions in Chrome browser).

  4. Enable Developer Mode

  5. Click on the Unpacked Extension button.

  6. Navigate to the vladikoff-archon-44bc9ba24037 folder, highlight it and click Open.

  7. The ARChon Runtime is now 'installed'. You can run modified apks compatible with this Runtime. You will find download links in the spreadsheet above. To modify your own apks, you can now convert them online, on an Android device or through terminal on Windows.

  8. To launch compatible apps, load them using Unpacked Extension button in Chrome Extension settings and click launch. Ignore any manifest warnings it may display. Example is shown here (thanks to u/Vermilion). You should be able to run an unlimited number of apps.

Notes:

  • App orientation affects compatibility. Some apps will run only in tablet mode, some only in phone and some in both. This attribute is editable through editing the manifest.json file in the app folder. Details on how to change app orientation and resolution can be found here.
  • To change the technical apk name to the actual app Icon and name, edit the file "messages.json" in the _locales/en directory. Edit the text for message under extName. To change the icon from default, replace icon.png with the actual icon and name it the same. Then, reload the extension. (thanks u/kiyo21)
  • For further tweaks, find list of possible manifest.json values here.
  • There is also an older method of running apps uses the Google Runtime which is compatible only with ChromeOS and replaces an officially available Android app (Vine, Duolingo, Evernote, Sightwords) with an app of your choice (which has to be modified). It enables only four apps to be run at the same time (seeing as there are four slots or keys from the officially released Android apps). For this, you download an officially released Android app, then mount the Google-Runtime-compatible apk in Extensions and launch. Further instructions and information can be found here.
  • User u/Vermilion modified SimpleLauncher to allow running many apks without needing to modify them. You simply need to install ARChon-compatible SimpleLauncher APK from here, launch it from Chrome, put any APKs into the 'vendor/chrome/crx/' directory of the SimpleLauncher folder and then relaunch from Chrome to launch your apps. The app compatibility for this method differs from the list above, as many non-functioning apps do work with SimpleLauncher while some working ones do not. More information here.
  • We do not allow download links to paid apps. Posting links to paid apks in the subreddit is a bannable offence.
