You should read the section "I have X amount of money" of this sub.

It should be able to point you in the right direction.

The first thing you do when starting out is to mitigate the risk portion of your portfolio. These are your insurances. Any money you put away basically becomes spent within a year or two if you become disabled or you know, die. So get Life and Disability.

Then open up an investment account like a Roth IRA if your company does not have a 401(k). The company you go through doesnt really matter because they will invest it themselves in a different company. So a Roth IRA through State Farm that invests in Fidelity would be the same as a Roth IRA from Merril Lynch that invests in Fidelity.

I would stay away from crap companies like State Farm though. And find someone who is knowledgeable to invest with.

You could also invest it yourself and open up an account with Vanguard or something like that.

Edit: I thought this was personal finance. I am subscribed to both and dont really read what Sub it is when I read the thread titles.
