I'm just a simple unfrozen caveman, and your analytics confuse me. Could someone explain to me what's going on here, and the implications. I'm new to this form of topsy

For those who are confused; the search is showing the results for gamergate and the results for gamergate that do not contain any of the listed words, as you can see if you take out the all talk about the LWs, feminism, and sjws the results aren't that different.

Similar applications can be made about any slurs or "hate speech" accusations. The link below includes examples I could think of. I'm sure some of you will come up with more inclusive proof.

The numbers don't lie. The facts are on our side.

I am so confused. What does this mean? That the more phrases put into Topsy's search, the more it incorrectly registers?

coolwordsOP•

Just like Google search, you can put in negative search terms. In other words,

Out of the 1,578,780 tweets sent using the #GamerGate hashtag in the last month, 1,378,728 don't even make any reference whatsoever to these people - completely disproving the repeated lie that "[even if the journalistic integrity concerns were valid,] the movement has become mostly about attacking/whining about specific people".

As for the second link I posted in the comment, it attempts to illustrate the argument that the majority of gamergate has become a "hate group" or uses "hate speech" by doing the same with the gender-oriented slurs. Only 3000 out of 1500000+ #GamerGate tweets include these words.

That being said, I'm sure more keywords can be added (to be removed from the results) to provide a more comprehensive/indisputable picture of the fact that that's not what is is all about.

Wazowski•

Just to be clear, your point here is that only half of #gamergate tweets contain the words "bitch" "slut" and "whore"?

1
coolwordsOP•

No, the point is that 1,585,700 tweets out of the 1,578,780 tweets sent using the #GamerGate hashtag in the last month DON'T use these words. So the narrative they're spinning about how the movement has been "hijacked" and is mostly about hate bases it's argument on merely 3k out of 1.5M tweets.

http://i.imgur.com/VF9uQ4l.png

Are we getting different results or something?

4
Wazowski•

Yeah, it's telling me that out of 1,587,612 tweets, only 801,996 didn't contain "bitch" "slut" or "whore".

That... Doesn't seem very likely. (The results of course, not claiming you're lying or anything).

Have you tried, uh, Ctrl + F5 or something?

Now I'm confused.

2
JoeDonJackson•

I don't get it either... seems to me that if this is filtering out those slurs, every third or so tweet has them ?

That doesn't sound very likely ?

Or am I reading it wrong?

1
coolwordsOP•

Are we getting different results? My screen says that those without the slurs are nearly the same as the entirety. With a mere 3k out of 1.5M including the slurs. http://i.imgur.com/VF9uQ4l.png

3
JoeDonJackson•

No, now I am getting the same (from the original link) , but before I got about 2/3 containing non-slurs

2
SushiSaki•

I had no idea the site could do that. That's very handy. Posted it to twitter yet?

3
coolwordsOP•

Nope. By all means, please do go ahead and spread it around if you'd like to :)

Tell them how you once pissed in the ocean and now it's mostly urine.

coolwordsOP•

Oh I'm definitely saying this before I link ^^

2
ArtemisiaPoppycock•

If Anti-Gg is going to do this to make it look like GamerGate is all about he-man woman-hating, they should at least break them down by phrase.

Not to mention that all of the #notyourshield #GamerGate tweets from women get included with that, and the tweets criticizing GJP for using Sarkeesian or Quinn to deflect attention from their unprofessional behavior.

goonerh1•

Looks good! Worth noting though that you misspelled @spacekatgal so the actual graph looks a little different

2
coolwordsOP•

Oh crap. Where the fuck did I come up with "packet" -.-

I don't suppose there's any way to correct the link?

is_computer_on_fire•

Neat, I like it. This could backfire though. Context is important, anti-GG might start to throw in these words in their tweets just like some here started to add meows to their posts.

Oooh I like this.

Edit: It seems I missed your initial sentence, and misunderstood your comment as a result. Perhaps the "+" only works that way - which would make sense since you're searching for something which includes both your initial entry plus the other word, but not the minus. You're searching for anything which has the keyword, but doesn't have any of the other keywords. You do realize you couldn't even fit all the negative search terms into a single tweet, which would make it impossible for the result to be 1.3m instead of 1.5m, right? :)

--

I disagree. Sure, people may discuss a whole lot of things using the hashtag, but claiming the majority has become about hate or specific people seems to be a popular way to dismiss #GamerGate. And this is as factual as it gets when it comes to dismissing that myth.

Particularly considering how broad we're being here including words like woman and gender which cause a whole lot of #notyourshield and other stuff to be thrown in there as well.

However else they may want to attack us, it's simply not about the drama these people have been stirring up. Heck it's not even about who happens to have which set of genitalia.

Thank you for this OP!
