Why did Leigh Alexander say "Pirates" leaked her book from Though Catalog? I think I might know.

10100101 <- That multiplied by a lot make up the letters to my words. And my words paint a picture to what I want you to gain from them. So when someone flashes something in front of me, I try to gain as much as I can from it's content. Easiest thing for me to gain is words. That's why Leigh Alexander's words caught me off guard.

"The digital publisher, Thought Catalog, gave me an advance to do my first book '[Breathing Machine, A Memoir of Computers][3]'. Which is a memoir of growing up along side the early internet and computers and stuff."

Ok... when does this get interesting... well she goes on to say:

"Basically, as soon as I took their money though, they started letting their quality bar plummet by publishing transphobic hate speech."

Um, that's bad I guess? Well NO it's not. I am not stating my stance with that. Basically what I am saying is that Thought Catalog tries to be an eloquent free speech platform. A platform, that even if you don't agree, will publish effective opinions opposite one another on behalf of it's authors. Right, Left, Authoritarian, Marxist, and so on, but it doesn't matter. Thought Catalog published everything that can sell and doesn't seem to show discrimination to that fact.

So here comes the good part

"Somebody leaked my book on to the internet. So now instead of giving money to Thought Catalog, there's horrible pirates stealing it, OOPS[2]"

-Leigh Alexander

I'm [expletive] confused. You used a free speech platform to push your book, took their money, didn't agree with the other writers using the same platform, and possibly let someone leak your book on the internet, then promoted that fact. So that way no one would get the money?

That has got to be the most Self Shilling, I've ever witnessed. And I've never once used that word seriously, that was the first(congratulate me).

Well, this gets deeper. I went on to find the "Transphobic" hate speech that was published. I found that it is by VICE/Rooster co-founder Gavin McInnes, called 'Transphobia Is Perfectly Natural', which has been removed from the site for hate speech[1]. Whether I agree with it or not, he used the right platform, and obviously conveyed it well enough to get published along with Leigh Alexander.

I did the search for his company and boycott and in the search, available here it's about as expected. He was asked to take an indefinite leave of absence due to the publication and subsequent loss of advertisers.

All of this just confuses me, and maybe you. Basically Leigh Alexander punished Thought Catalog for doing what it does, publishing free speech/opinoin. Instead of going after the producer of those thoughts via a consumer level. Which leads me too:

This Gem

Which would be a true smoking gun if she ever mentions the fact that there was a boycott/revolt on this product's advertisers. But supporters of her plight sure did take it to the Thought Catalog, much like GamerGate does with Gawker, Kotaku, and Gamasutra, et. al. Instead, she also goes straight for Thought Catalog, who wasn't phased by the loss, but then writes Vice articles.

Alright, I'm done. I can't even right now. Too plebbed out. Thanks for reading and if someone could archive and pass those alongs to me, I will edit them in. I am at working right now and it blocks archive as a proxy site.

A few of the leaders in that little revolt where

Leigh Alexander for her part in leaking book.

Edit [2]: Added the sarcastic OOPS as I missed it. It was pointed out by u/BundleBee.

Edit [3]: Fixed the book name with the Amazon listing, it wasn't comprehensible to me via video

FTFY, you left off the most important bit.

I watched this when it first came out and instantly went "Oh she leaked her book, very very interesting...."

I will edit that in. Didn't realize how important that really was until you pointed it out.

Edit: and I will CREDIT THE SHIT OUT OF YOU!

Ty btw didn't see the edit. You only posted what I was thinking :)

Has anyone contacted the publisher with that video? I wouldn't be surprised if they would be rather interested to see it.

I'm not sure I understand this..... am I reading it right that her moral objection to Thought Catalog was that they published something by Gavin McInnes, which was enough for her to undermine Thought Catalog, but NOT enough for her to not write for Gavin McInnes, the person that wrote the thing she was so offended by?

It wasn't so much that. She didn't really have to take it to Gavin McInnes, but she doesn't have to write for Vice, the place he co-founded. Even if he is no long there at this time.

As a sort of longtime fan of Leigh Alexander, and someone who will still defend her as a writer and critic, I have to admit that I stopped reading her after her temper tantrum in response to the McInness piece. I have no patience for the enforcement of orthodoxy.

I'm really curious to what I may be missing with some of this. I tracked most of the drama down, but I feel like there is still a lot of stuff I might be missing, I'd love a recap if you can muster one.

mentilsoup•

This, specifically? It seems to have been memory-holed, but if you flex your Google-fu on "McInnes" + transphobia + medium you might find the offending heresy.

I was never able to find the tie between McInnes and Leigh Alexander. However, there is no way that I can see Leigh Alexander still righting for Vice. that seems off. If you want, send me a message with some info I should use to learn, and grow.

I'm sure all her e-books are selling to her massive army, once they've heard about it via her megaphone.

You should see the amazon reviews

DonutsStrongJaw•

Do you really have any proof that Leigh leaked the book, or are you just assuming?

5
f3yleaf•

Who knows, she literally took credit for it, which was kind of amusing.

Wylanderuk•

Taking her at her "wink wink, oops" speech made in public on stage which was recorded.

Proof? No, but also no doubts based on her own words.

14
Homer00025•

Legally she is probably fine (assuming). Think about the professional implications. What kind of publisher would give her an advance for a book when confronted with this?

Wow, i was amazed at the unprofessional behavior before, but this is pathological.

It's amazing what people will do when they think they're in a safe environment, ain't it?

evilarhan•

The quote could be taken as admission of guilt, but it's inconclusive. However, the assumption is reinforced by the following quote: "Thank you! That started me thinking about self-publishing..."

It's extremely unprofessional, is what it is.

7
OracleofGaming•

Easy answer: If it wasn't her or someone she knew, she would have blamed us.

6
lumenationOPPowerGamer Contributor•

I said possibly. There will never be a smoking gun. That opens her up to lawsuits from Thought Catalog. And I used wording that would allow for doubt as I don't want to be sued for libel.

5
GamerGateFan•

I can't remember the legal term but there is a part in a court case that allows evidence to be investigated and records to be opened if there are enough signs that something might be found. So if they did bring it to suit they would have the power to find the smoking gun.

Leigh needs to check her fashion privilege because those pants raped my eyes.

INTERESTING So due to that boycott, Gavin Mcginess was fired http://adland.tv/adnews/gavin-mcinnes-fired-having-dissenting-opinion/349103204

and here's SJW's jumping on Adland on twitter as soon as it published that https://twitter.com/adland/status/500700190152855552

and of all people, Parker Marie Molloy arguing with Adland on twitter about it https://twitter.com/adland/status/500735861156093953/photo/1

https://twitter.com/doritosyndrome/status/500738292334460928

is this basically the same core crew of writers and twitter-people, always?

1
NPerez99•

also yes, that sounds like she pirated her own book on purpose and gloated about it. I know it's not something we can confirm, but I find this shows her style.

Holy shit. If this 'Transphobia Is Perfectly Natural' was meant to be sarcastic, it fails catastrophically. These people! arggh

As for the "boycott & freedom" tweet, that's a great gem indeed. It wasn't archived, so here it is: https://archive.today/SAMsZ
