Which Expansions/Major DLCs are recommended?

Looking at the 3 or 4 expansions (Paradox says both AoW and Res Publica are the 3rd expansions), which can you recommend?

I'm also curious about the American Dream DLC, is that still broken, and is worthwhile to have if you aren't playing as the US?

It all depends so much on your playstyle. Personally, I'd grab all the functionality-ones. If it's a cash-based decision just wait until they are doing a sale again. Might want to grab the newer DLCs first since they are the least likely to be offered at a significant discount.

If you use steam, do also keep an eye on Humble Store and any other online shops that offer steam codes.

Art of war is amazing. Res Publica is also really good. But definitely get art of war. A personal favorite is wealth of nations, because trading nations are neat.

I don't know anything about the American Dream though, but you can only play as the U.S. For a couple years. It might not be worth it.

Wealth of Nations also added the fervor mechanic for reformed christians. I've never used it myself but it seems pretty neat.

The U.S. is formable and you still get the events from the American Dream if you form it. The requirements can be found in USANation.txt, and are;

Admin tech 10, must must be a former colonial nation, must be independant, must be at peace, must have your capital in the Colonial Eastern America, and the USA must not exist.

You must also fullfill these conditions;

		NOT = { has_country_flag = changed_from_colonial_nation }
		OR = {
			is_former_colonial_nation = yes
			is_colonial_nation = yes
		}
		colonial_eastern_america = {
			owned_by = ROOT
		}
		OR = {
			ai = no
			AND = {
				ai = yes
				num_of_cities = 3
			}
		}

I believe this means you may not form another nation that can only be formed by colonial nations (such as Canada, Mexico, Quebec, or Brazil), or you must be both a former colonial nation and a colonial nation (?). You must own either entire Colonial Eastern America region or just one province in it (not sure), or either not be an AI and be an AI with at least 3 cities (?)

Can't you only play as a colonial nation if you have conquest of paradise? I don't know, if so then American dream seems kinda pointless unless you get multiple DLCs.

If you can play as a colonial nation without it, then yea I can see the use of it.

Colonial Nations always form, even without Conquest of Paradise, and yes, I do believe they are playable in the base game.
