Toyota Corolla steering wheel noise

Hey guys, I recently bought a used (36k) Toyota Corolla 2005. It seems that everything is fine but there is perhaps a problem with the steering column.

The car does not drift to a side and I don't struggle to turn the wheel. But when I do turn the wheel or go over a bump or a pothole, it seems to make some sort of noise. Do you guys know what this may be? I have attached a video to demonstrate exactly what it is.

Thank you :)

What happens if you let go of the wheel when going over a bump? It sounds like a worn U-joint on the column, but hard to tell from the vid.

does the wheel wiggle if you lift on it?

Hi, I've just done that now (safely of course). The noise occurs but the car more or less carries on straight.

And the wheel doesn't wiggle, it's solid as a rock.

Ok, the its likely play in the ujoint or in the rack itself. Wonky suspension would cause bump steer, which you seem not to have.

How much play do you have in the steering wheel? Any?

Not much (if at all).

I might take it to a local mechanic to have a look at it. It's a shame really, otherwise it's a smooth ride (for a 2nd car!)
