Sword and board is the best way to go for n00bs

Go sunbro. Get a Sunsword. Get 40/40 Str/Dex. R1 your way to victory.

Edit; please don't hate me but this is pretty much the best thing to do regardless of skill

Where can I get a Sunsword?

I would tell you exactly, but I don't like totally spoiling things. The longsword is comparable to it if you need the weapon immediately. If you explore a certain area that's pretty poisonous (but don't actually go into the poison lol) you'll come across a covenant. Fulfill that covenants desires and you'll get your wondrous Sun Sword.

Get lots of strength and use clubs and maces.

To add to this... powerstance two clubs. Basic clubs. You can get them super early for dirt cheap from the witch at the 2nd bonfire in the Forest of Fallen Giants.

You get 150% of the strength and dex reqs. I think it's like 18 str and 5 dex. This allows you to hold Y or the pc equivalent while dual wielding and you will raise both clubs into position.

You literally cannot fuck up the L1 and the L2 just shits out damage. Doing this you will learn to roll and you can move to powerstancing maces, which does even more damage (most speedrunners powerstance maces) but a bit harder to time attacks.

As a noob you probably don't want to be using dual weapons. As an experienced player who knows all the movesets and attack patterns, it would be easy to powerstance w/o shield. But to a noob you definitely want a shield in hand.

I disagree. It's good to try out shield, yes, but I think that starting out as shield and developing a dependence on it is bad. For starters, lack of physical resist on shields until you get 100% phys resist will get you killed over and over. You might as well learn how to dodge or parry. Likewise many newbies have no idea of the damage boost you get from 2handing a weapon, which is a big bloody deal when starting out certain classes.

EDIT: And from my experience in pvp and MP, low level dueling that isn't smurfs leads to newbies with shields getting backstabbed for days or having no idea how to properly dodge or turtle because they're so reliant on just sitting behind a shield and hoping for the best.

tl;dr: Being forced to learn how to dodge without having a shield was the best thing that happened to me when I first started playing Dark Souls1.

Get comfortable with lighter weapons then work your way up to heavy weapons. Slow weapons definitely have a higher skill cap because you need to practice timing and when to combo R1. Infused elemental weapons do a lot of damage.

For pvp you should have atleast 20+ vigor and 15+ endurance, stats vary with build but their are some examples out there. Vitality depends on how heavy your armor/weapons are. A good goal is to pick a weapon then get minimum str/dex to wield it and work on other stats. ADP is optional i dont know a lot of about it but agility helps invincibility frames while rolling. Personally i raise it to like 12 because poison/bleed aren't really a threat in pvp. (at least for me)Depending on the weapon and your infusion path/normal build higher str/dex will obviously be better if weapons have a b+ rating.

I don't play online so no PvP for me

If you want to be able to dodge things level ADP to at least 30 by some point or enemies and bosses will tag you at the end of your rolls constantly

Duel wielding is fun as hell, especially curved swords or great swords. Give it a shot.

A greatsword like the Bastard Sword or the Claymore or even the Black Knight Greatsword would be my suggestion. Greatswords are a really versatile weapon class: they have good range, swing in wide arcs(useful for crowd control), and deal good damage. They're well suited for a first playthrough.

You can get the Bastard Sword in the Forest of the Fallen Giants near the beginning of the game, and the Claymore can be bought from Vengarl once you've reached the Shaded Woods.

If you're looking to add spells into the mix, miracles are a good way to go. You'll get healing spells and lightning attacks, and will eventually be able to wield and buff lightning infused weapons.

start a quality build and learn every weapon types movesets

Start as a cleric, you get a mace which you will want to powerstance with another mace later on, and you get the Heal Miracle, allowing you to get hit now and then if you mess up a bit since you can heal afterwards. You can decide what you want from there, but I recommend powerstancing and getting a bit more attunement and faith for more healing spells.

Mace is OP even at base. Has a nice atk speed, nice damage, it's light and works well with a shield.

Combo that with Sorcery (for those lovely soul arrows) and you've got yourself a quality(literally, not 40/40) build

Classic Sword & Shield "knight" build is the way to go.

Get a fuckass huge sword, a fuckass huge shield, level up your stats til you can use them, and wreck stuff.

If ranged combat is more your speed, focusing on sorcery is pretty simple and there's a good starting class for it.

Start with the mace, and then move to THE greatsword (found in a pirate themed area), or the large club (found after a trio boss). Big strength weapons are pretty easy to beat the game with.

Big smashy weapons start off as extremely low-skill/high-reward weapons, and with time become high-skill/infinite-reward weapons, so I recommend picking one to start with, and trying other lighter options to see what you like. For progression's sake the easiest thing to do (I find) is to grab the Large Club asap, pour 40-50 points in Str, and upgrade the shit out of it as it gains S-scaling and deals massive strike damage. Also, grab Drangleic Shield asap, and go from there. Eventually, you'll be comfortable enough to use the 2h R2 smash and the 1h R1prettymuch exclusively, and you'll wonder why other weapons even exist.

One and two-shotting things, with the ability to go from outside of enemy range to being inside it while delivering huge amounts of damage, while using 100phys shields AND still have the option to use dodgeroll i-frames, is very safe and newb-friendly. Having massive potential to straight-up end fights before they really take off is a ridiculous advantage compared to someone who needs to be within enemy range for longer periods of time, delivering many successful strikes. If you're new, go big. You don't want to skirmish at close-range because the best way to mitigate damage is to reduce the opportunity to recieve it, by destroying your target in the least amount of time possible with the least amount of effort. After a while, you may want to branch out and challenge yourself more, which leads me to Adaptability.

Adp, or Agility rather, is the epitome of a high skill ceiling stat. If you want to be godlike, abuse those i-frames you get when rolling. I did not realize this until I was wrecked over and over by Smelter Demon as I tried using shields to defend myself and also stay out of range. This was the first real "fuck you" boss I encountered that made me think outside my +10 Raw Malformed Skull/Tower Shield/Near-naked box. I decided to respec, decreasing my Vig and Vit, and increasing my Adp to 35 (Agi to 110). I walked through the Smelter Demon's fog wall and proceed to repeatedly dive through his attacks and work him into dust. After getting a feel for the timings, I felt like "I leveled up"/gained real in-game power that wasn't simply handed to players through obvious gear choices or stat choices that equates to ridiculous straight-forward damage.

Agi is the most absolute and versatile defensive measure at your disposal. It allows you to cut corners on other defensive stats (my Vig hasn't surpassed 7 as a Deprived, on Level 145 now). Your Agi score plays a huge role in powerstancing/dual wielding as well, which is arguably the most high-risk/high-reward styles of play next to relying on parrying.

Don't overlook Adaptability!
