My husband is finally back in our bed!

brag

For the past two years my son has been cosleeping with me. For the first year, my husband still fit. We only had a queen size and he is 6'4" and takes up half on his own. After that he wasn't getting good sleep and moved to the couch. This was not ideal but it was worked for us. Any time we tried to get him to sleep in his crib or mattress on the floor, he would cry until he was on the verge of puking so we waited...and waited. Finally at 2 years and 2 months we were ready. I read a few books and researched online. We decided on a method similar to Ferber. We would do a routine (bath, pjs, teeth, nursing (for now), kiss, and place in bed with guard rail). Then we would set the timer for 5 minutes. We would comfort him for about a minute and set timer for 10 minutes. Reapeat then set timer for 15 minutes. We really expected to have a hard time. He has always resisted going to sleep. The first night he was asleep in 30 minutes. Woke up a few times and cried for a few minutes. Longest stretch was midnight and he cried for 45 minutes with us doing the 5, 10, 15 minute checkins. The second night he went to sleep after 1 minute of crying. We though we must be dreaming. He woke a few times but never cried longer than 5 minutes. Third night he didn't cry at all before laying down to sleep. Whimpered a few times during the night. We have had a few back slides where he cries for about 30 minutes again either to start or around midnight, but for the most part he is easy to comfort and it is getting better. We are all getting better sleep and my husband is off the couch. We weren't able to do this as an infant, but he can tolerate it better now that he is older and we aren't worried about damage. We don't think this is selfish as it is good to develop good sleep habits. He has cried longer during some of his tantrums. I have seen some parents really berate other parents over sleep training (calling them selfish and accusing them of child abuse), but I am so happy it worked for us. Just wanted to share our story. If cosleeping still works for you until kindergarten that is great. If you sleep train at 6 months, that is great too. It was just our time. Not every kid will be this easy I'm sure, but we really thought we were in for a battle and it turned out to be a breeze. If anyone wants more details, just let me know. The books didn't really tell me info I didn't know, they were more like a pep talk about how you aren't going to screw up your kid by doing this. I just cherry picked the ideas I liked. Oh and the crying did feel like forever and the timer really helped to make me realize that it wasn't as long as it seemed.

This gives me hope!!!! My son sleeps in his crib, but right now he still falls asleep next to me, and then I move him to his crib. I'm looking forward to the days of kiss and goodnight.

Congratulations!!!

Good luck and thanks, mine could never be transferred. He would always wake and scream and then go into panic mode.

Going to start tonight with night weaning, to hopefully move her to her to her own bed when she's around two, and my husband back in my bed again...

Any tips?

The night weaning happened at the same time for me and one of the reasons we did the sleep training. My sleep was crap because he would wake every 1-2 hours to nurse and twiddle the other side. If I didn't give him the boob, he was fully wake and cry. Once we moved him to his bed I just nursed him before I laid him down and nurse him at either 3 or 5 am if I have to go to work. I don't want to explode. If it is the weekend, I just offer water until we wake up between 7-8. Some people have luck shortening how long they nurse. Like if the sessions last 15 minutes cut it to 10 for a few nights and then 5 and then stop. He was just a grazer and wasn't on long, just long enough to wake me up so that method didn't really work for us.

At night she does the buffet style nursing... On and off and on and off and on and off and on and off... Etc. that's the thing that really annoys me, just drink, or don't, but don't do this half and half thing!

So yeah, nursing less time won't work for us either. I'll keep water by hand though..

If you're night weaning, the number one tip I can give you is to let your husband do the night wake-ups, at least for a few weeks. Your baby will scream much louder and longer if they can smell you, but don't get their usual fix!

Unfortunately that's not an option... He is extremely busy right now, usually doesn't come home until 23:00 or midnight and needs to sleep... Especially because she'll wake up a lot.

Totally! I would watch the clock like a hawk, and I could have sworn my daughter had been screaming for 15 minutes, but it really had just been 1.5 minutes.
