Help finding game? Mecha top down shmup

Anime style. I think you select one of two characters, it had a pattern were the levels were divided into a couple (3?) sections where you start with a fighter or land unit, and in some of them you could rescue civilians. Last section was always a walking robot with a sword. Japanese.

Sorry about the lack of detail but this was more than 20 years ago. Finding my old nes console started a trip down memory lane and now I'm going crazy trying to find this one.

No. It had a more anime feel to it, and you controlled a walking robot in the last section of each level. Thanks for the reply :)

The Guardian Legend is the only vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up I know of where you control a walking robot (aerobot transformer in the manual), but that's about all it has in common with your mystery game, besides the obvious.

I've played and owned a ton of NES/Famicom shooting games but nothing comes to mind... seriously, I'm stumped. I'm usually pretty good at identifying obscure games, but nope, nothin'.

Gall Story, maybe?
