Match keys and news
- Atlético are 3th in Liga with 29 points, 2 points below Barcelona and 3 over Sevilla. Villarreal are 6th (8 points below Atleti). On Saturday Barcelona will face Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez and Sevilla will host Eibar on Sunday
- Last Tuesday Atlético secured the top spot in the Champions League group A after the 0-0 draw against Juventus. Villarreal beat Apollon 0-2 on Thursday to qualify for the Europa League round of 32
- Last Liga matchday Atlético won 0-2 over Elche on a gloomy day and Elche beat Real Sociedad 4-0
- Next Thursday Atlético will host L'Hospitalet for the Copa del Rey round of 32 second leg. The first leg ended 0-3 for Atleti. On the other hand, Villarreal will try to certify their qualification against Cádiz on Wednesday after their 1-2 victory on the first leg
- Last season Atlético beat Villarreal 1-0 with a "typical header" by Raúl García after a corner
- Miranda is already recovered and may perform. Ansaldi will be out until 2015. Mario Suárez missed Thursday training because muscle fatigue, but he may be available.
- Villarreal will miss the injured players Jokic, Musacchio and Giovanni dos Santos. Cani is doubtful but he will probably be available
- Koke, Mandžukic and Miranda have 4 yellow cards and will miss the match against Athletic if they are booked again. Jaume Costa is in the same situation on Villarreal's side
- Some Villarreal fans are still mad at Atleti because two seasons ago (2011/12) Atlético beat them 0-1 on the last match of the season to try to qualify for the next Champions League instead of letting them win so they could avoid the relegation
- First home match at Calderón after the ban of Frente Atlético as official peña and the expulsion of their identified violent members. Their section shouldn't be empty unless they decide to protest somehow, as most of them only got "a yellow card" because they weren't involved (or haven't been identified yet) during the incidents before the match against Deportivo. Any incident or violent manifestation will mean the immediate ban of the involved members just like Atlético will ban the Frente Atlético members who travelled to Turín and weren't politically correct
Talking points
- The next Copa del Rey match should't be very demanding and there will be rotations definitely, but Should Simeone rest any players of those who performed against Juve? Who?
- Miranda is back. Should he play against Villarreal or better give him some time to get back in shape? Giménez has been great during Miranda's absence, will (or should) this change his status as "never starter"?
- Do you think that Siqueira should start or would you try playing Gámez?
- January will be specially tough if Atlético certify the Copa del Rey qualification. "Partido a partido" or "long term planning"?
- Line-up and result?
