"Trust the Frog"
Here's a story, and maybe a moral, but mostly a story...
This takes place about ten years ago, a little more, in high school. A friend of mine had yet to experience getting high, and I, just that morning on April 20th, had just made a small purchase from an upstanding young businessman. This would be our first holiday.
We stayed at my house that night, my parents generally left me alone and, though I didn't know at the time, didn't care if I left the house at night, so long as I used the front door. After dinner, we hung out in my room, played some Ps2, and bid our time, waiting for the right moment to leave.
After a few hours the house was quiet, and we slipped out into the night, brimming with excitement. We walked to a nearby community park that we regularly visited, packed a bowl, and took off...
Now, this is not my first rodeo, but I'm no seasoned veteran at this time, and my buddy, he's as wrecked as I feel. This could have been mid grade and we'd have been bad off, but this was a prime score, high level beast that was pretty enough to pass for heads, and we were not prepared. So we sat, and sat, and sat, just lost in the most intense high either of us had experienced. For my part at least, I had a serious case of the wub-wubs, and I was on the moon, which made it weird that there were frogs, but who was I to criticize their space program? My buddy was lost in thought, gazing toward some distant incandescent galaxy in the near distance, but squinting, like he was really trying to pick up a distant noise.
-
Dude, you ok?
-
Yeah man, just listening to the wind, it's saying 'heeyyyyy.'
-
Alright, but how do you hear that over these loud-ass frogs?
-
What fro- Oh, shit!
-
What?
-
They're saying 'cop'
-
No they aren't.
-
Yes they are!
-
No, they ar-
-
Now they're saying 'run!' We need to go!
-
Dude, they aren't sayi-
And so we ran...
I don't remember everything after that, and the night was rather uneventful, with us going back to my house to listen to shitty music and watch the visualizer on iTunes for a few hours, but after that, we'd say to each other "Trust the Frog" when we had that gut feeling, and then, we'd run like hell.
...Not really, but we were prepared to if need be.
Nowadays though, it's something I keep in mind when smoking with those less experienced than I. "Trust the Frog" is just "Follow your gut" I suppose, but it's about other people's gut as well. It's about making sure everyone's at the correct cruising altitude, and sometimes, you run like hell into the perfect activity.
TL;DR: got faced with a buddy, heard some shit, ran like hell. Learned to trust others' hunches, if for nothing more than to help them feel safe.
