The two sides are now out on the pitch as kick-off approaches.
1' Off we go! Villareal get the match started!
3' Mario receives the ball at right back and looks for the run in behind the defence from Vietto, but the Argentine's movements are just shielded by Godín, who marshals possession through to à who comes out to claim.
7' Trigueros languishes in possession in the wrong area and Tiago pounces to win the ball for Atletico. The former Chelsea man doesn't have the pace to burst down the wing so reverts back to Gabi as the home side recycle the ball.
9' Juanfran sends a lovely pass down the right channel for Arda and the Turk fires a teasing cross into the box. It is begging to be smashed home but there are no takers for Atlético! The ball eventually comes to Siqueira on the left wing and he sends a wild strike over the bar.
11' For some reason Victor Ruíz allows the ball to go out for a corner kick even though he could have cleared it. Atletico take it short and Juanfran then hits the byline before standing a superb cross into the box, but Villarreal do well to clear.
17' We've got our first booking of the match and it goes to Uche. Godín strides out of defence and the Nigerian thinks it is a good idea to trip him up in a completely nothing position. Daft challenge and a daft yellow card.
25' Cheryshev drives down the left wing and looks to release Vietto, but ends up receiving the ball back and passing inside to Trigueros. The midfielder spreads the play out wide to Mario, who swings a wicked cross to the back post, but Miranda is on hand to commandingly head out of the box.
27' In the most stonewall booking you will see this season, Arda completely takes out Vietto inside the centre circle as the Argentine goes on a marauding run by two or three of the Turk's team-mates. That attack looked promising for the visitors, but it ends with a yellow card for the Atletico man.
31' Uche stretches his legs through the middle as Villarreal have Atlético on the ropes slightly. The Nigerian spots the darting run of Vietto but the Nigerian's pass just has a little too much on it, which allows Miranda to play back to Moyà. However, the Atlético keeper slices the ball straight out for a corner kick.
35' Vietto robs Godín of the ball in a dangerous position just in front of the Atlético box and drives forward, looking for an opening. The Argentine takes too much time to pick out a pass or get a shot away, and ends up losing possession.
37' Juanfran gets into an advanced position down the right wing and reverses a lovely pass to the edge of the box for Tiago. The Portuguese opens up his body to send a fantastic strike towards the right corner, but Asenjo manages to get across goal to palm the attempt wide.
39' Well there is all sorts of drama here as Dos Santos and Mandžukić both go down at the same time clutching each other's heads after a clash down the left wing. It is all a bit embarrassing and the referee probably does the correct thing and books them both. The Villarreal man the more guilty party out of the two, though.
37' Siqueira gallops down the left flank and takes on Mario but the Villarreal right back is having none of it and gives him a push straight on the back, sending him out flying out of the pitch. No prizes for guessing that Atlético get the free kick, and it is in a useful position at the byline.
37' Cheryshev manages to counterattack down the left channel and finds himself one-on-one with the defender. The Russian finds a pocket of space just inside the box to get the shot away, but it is pretty weak in the end and Moyà gets down to make the save.
45+1' Penalty shout for Villareal! There are plenty of bodies surrounding the ball inside the Atlético box, and Gabi appears to nudge it out of the way of Uche with the top of his arm! That's a definite spotkick, but the ref didn't see it!
HALF-TIME Atlético de Madrid 0 - 0 Villareal CF
45' - Atlético get us back underway for the second half.
47' Siqueira gets down the left and spots the run of Arda through the centre. The Brazilian dinks the ball over the top of the Villarreal defence but just puts too much on it which allows Asenjo to come off the line and claim.
51' Vietto turns sharply 30 yards out and drives towards goal. He has options right and left but decides to have a crack at the bottom corner. It is a terrific strike but just drifts wide at the last minute! The 21-year-old has looked a threat so far!
53' Trigueros and Vietto link up with a lovely one-two on the edge of the Atlético box and the latter slides a pass down the right for Mario. The right back takes an assured touch before whipping a superb cross into the box, but there are no team-mates on hand to turn it in!
55' Gabi wins the ball back and gallops forward. Trigueros tracks him all the way and ends up scything down the Atlético captain with a challenge from behind. Free kick to Los Colchoneros in a very useful position 25 yards out. Can they capitalise?
56' Great save by Asenjo! Gabi dinks the free kick to the back post and the ball is headed back into the danger area. Mandžukić collects to feet and turns before smashing at goal, but the Villarreal keeper remains solid to make the block! The home side probing for the opener here!
59' GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLL FOR ATLÉTICO!! WAIT, NO, A FOUL HAS BEEN GIVEN!! Arda shows fantastic skill inside the box before dinking a teasing cross to the back post. Mandžukić rises high to bullet a header home but the Croatian is penalised for a nothing challenge on Mario! That is an awful decision from the ref!
63' Raúl García Antoine Griezmann
64' Juanfran is caught out of position at right back and Cheryshev takes advantage of the space available to gallop into the final third. The Russian teases a fantastic cross along the six yard box but Uche can't get there to make any contact!
72' Such a poor touch from Vietto! Villarreal counterattack at pace and Cheryshev leads the charge down the left-hand side. It is two versus one in favour of the visitors and the ball comes to the 21-year-old who only has the keeper to beat, but lets Atlético off the hook with a heavy touch which allows Moyà to get a vital touch in!
78' Cerci collects the ball down the right wing and thinks about taking on the defender but eventually cuts inside on his left foot. The former Torino man swings a cross into the box which Asenjo looks likely to claim, but Victor Ruiz takes no chances and fires a clearance into the stand.
84' GOOOOAAAAAALL FOR VILLARREAL!!! Vietto receives the ball to feet and leaves Godin for dead on the edge of the box before strutting forward and lifting the ball over Moyà! A snatch and grab from the Yellow Submarine! One-nil! Thanks to u/Omar_Til_Death

90' Three minutes of added time. Atlético typically never give up to the final whistle, so they can they claw back a goal in the latter stages here?!
90+2' The hosts are the best team in the league from set-pieces, and they get a free kick opportunity deep inside the Villarreal half. However, Koke's delivery goes straight into the hands of the grateful Asenjo. That should be it!
