Could it be Jay?: Cell records/cell tower explanation

I do not want to accuse Jay or absolve Adnan because I think this is a very muddled case, but I just want to show my thoughts about how it is POSSIBLE that Jay could have done it (and how my theory can be circumstantially corroborated by the cell phone records and cell tower pings because up until this point Koenig and her team (as stated in the final episode) could not present any good explanation for each and every location/call on the cell log. THIS IS ALL SPECULATION and "all speculation is equally speculative."

10:45 to 1:27 - (Adnan with Jay – doing what, who knows?)

10:45 - L651A - Woodlawn High School: Adnan calls Jay

12:07 - L688A - north of Ellicott City in the vicinity of an unlabeled park (unlabeled on Koenig's cell tower map - however according to modern day google maps, this area is actually part of Patapsco state park): Maybe the two of them were smoking weed in the park which would be semi-consistent with Jay’s testimony although apparently the part of park that he specifically referenced is in a different area, so white lie about the specific part, but larger truth about smoking in Patapsco? Or maybe the cops and/or Koenig misinterpreted the exact area of the park?) - this is an outgoing 21 second call to Jenn’s Home, I presumed Jay called her at this time to see if she was home from work and she wasn’t.

12:41 - L652A - east of Leakin Park, near baltimore city: For whatever reason (picking up more drugs or other ferris bueller type fun) they went into Baltimore city (this would be consistent with Jenn’s testimony that says when she spoke with them they were in Baltimore city (note this is an outgoing call to Jenn’s home for a minute 29 seconds) – the only weird thing about this is that Jenn testifies that she got home from work at 1:30, but this was clearly a call to her home landline (an inconsistency, but I will chalk it up to her just being slightly off about what time she got home)

12:43 - L652A – again still east of Leakin Park, near baltimore city: unidentified incoming call (who knows, probably not important).

1:27 –Jay takes Adnan back to school and he arrives to class (Koenig writes in Adnan’s timeline that there is a note at the top of Miss Paoletti’s lesson plan for January 13, 1999 that says “Adnan Syed late: (arrived at 1:27).” Leaves Jay with car – Note this isn’t anything from the call log, this is just from other evidence! I presume that Adnan stays at school and then goes to the library (consistent with Asia’s affidavit) in between school and track practice

Jenn testified that she got home around this time at 1:30 (she says she was home BEFORE Jay came over, but presuming that she answered the 12:41 call, then this point is no longer true.)

Jay goes to Jenn’s House around 1:30 after he drops off Adnan (The next incoming call shows that he was at Jenn’s house)

2:36 - L651B - Jenn’s House: unidentified incoming 5 second call

Some time between 2:36 and 3:15 Jay leaves Jenn’s house (although Jenn and Jay both testify that he left her house after 3:45, but for the purposes of full disclosure, I am presume that they are lying 1) because a lot of their other testimony about their time together is inconsistent between the two of them (one says x and the other says y) yet this one particular point is consistently the same between the both of them which seems suspicious all around to me. It seems like a purposeful, coordinated attempt to deliberately place Jay with her at up until 3:45 (how can two people so unsure of other details about their time together be so certain of this particular time that he leaves her house?). I think it is an alibi planned after the fact because as I lay out below I believe the crime was committed around 3:32.

3:15 L651C- The west part of the 651 tower I usually say is Adnan’s house, but best buy is also somewhat west, so I think that Jay is at Best buy during this phone call (I have no idea why he would be at best buy, maybe he went to smoke weed here, like Adnan?): This is a 20 second incoming call. Although I am not really sure who this is, I have a hunch that this is Hae calling Adnan (because Adnan had asked for a ride after school and I believe she is now leaving school) - remember Summer spoke with her at school some time between 2:30 and 2:45 and Deborah testified that she saw Hae at school between 2:45 and 3:15 and Hae is supposed to pick up her cousin at 3:15, so she is likely leaving at this time to fulfill her obligation before she goes to the wrestling match – In summary I think this is a phone call in which Jay briefly speaks with Hae and lures her to best buy (again I want to make it clear that while there is a suggested motive for Adnan since they have a romantic history, I do not have a good reason as to why Jay would 1) even answer a call from Hae and 2) want to meet with Hae, which is obviously the largest failing behind this theory).

*I do not think best buy is an erroneous plot point fabricated by Jay though for no particular reason other than my gut, it seems like too intricate of a detail for Jay to just completely make up that Adnan met up with Hae at Best Buy. Who would randomly think, "yeah Best Buy!"

3:21 - L651C - Same spot at Best Buy: Jay calls Jenn (for whatever reason) - waiting for hae?

3:32 - L651C – Again still at Best buy: This is the infamous Nisha call that Koenig (in the last episode) demonstrated could possibly be an accidental speed dial (which I agree) – I think this is when Hae was murdered (and the butt dial occurred during the chaos of that violence) and this blog post does a really detailed job of explaining the rationale if you care to look into it. http://viewfromll2.com/2014/12/13/serial-why-the-nisha-call-shows-that-hae-was-murdered-at-332-p-m/

3:48 - L651A – In the area of Best Buy/Woodlawn high: Jay calls Phil (maybe a friend that he is seeking some sort of advice from after murdering Hae?)- fairly long/over one minute convo: I think that at this point he has left best buy and is in Hae’s car with her dead body in the trunk

3:59 - L651A – Again in the vicinity of Bestbuy/Woodlawn high: Jay calls another friend, Patrick, maybe he panicking and wants advice from another friend, either short convo or friend doesn’t answer (20 seconds)

4:12 - L689A – Tower in the vicinity of Forest park/Leakin Park/ Park and ride: Jay calls Jenn. I think Jay drove Hae’s car to the park and ride and called jenn to come pick him up so that he could go get Adnan’s car in the best buy lot.

4:27 - L654C – In the vicinity of the Westview shopping center/Jenn’s house/Jay’s house: incoming call. I think at this point Jay has confessed to Jenn and they are back at Jenn’s house discussing what to do next *Note this is a long 2:56 call…maybe one of his earlier friends called him back and he is talking with him to get advice? Or maybe he went back to his own house and this is actually Jenn calling him from her own house to discuss what is next, or maybe it was someone for Adnan leaving a long voicemail message

4:58 - L654C – Same tower location as the previous call: again an incoming call, this one short only 19 seconds. Possibly Adnan calling to have Jay come pick him up?

Adnan gets picked up sometime between 5 and 5:15.

• Note though: Coach said that track usually gets out at 5:30 - 6:00pm. Although he didn’t seem to remember anything specific about that day and was just providing a generalization. Maybe practice finished a little early that day? Stuff like that happens all of time.

5:14 WB443/BLTM2 – These are not specific towers, but rather are indicators of a call to voicemail. I think at this point Jay has picked up Adnan and he is checking his voicemail to see if he missed anything, lasts 1:07

5:38 - L653C - 5:38pm – This is in the vicinity of the spot where Hae’s car will be moved to after her body is buried (the spot where the cops eventually find her car, NOT THE PARK AND RIDE WHERE HER CAR IS CURRENTLY): At this time Adnan makes a 2 second call to his friend krista. I don’t really know what is going on at this time as this location is North East of Cathy’s house where both Jay and Adnan testify going to after school. Maybe there is a place over here where they buy weed to take to Cathy’s house? (and during that time Jay noticed a place to leave the car?)

6:07 - L655A - Cathy’s house: Short incoming call ~ 20 second (maybe someone looking for Hae?): They are now at Cathy’s smoking (this is consistent with both Jay and Adnan’s stories)

6:09 - L608C - Random tower near nothing, but sort of close to cathy’s house (I am just going to say they are still at Cathy’s and another close by tower is just picking up the calls as many towers overlap in territory): Short incoming call (maybe someone looking for Hae again?)

6:24 - L608C –Again same tower as above: Long incoming call (> 4 minutes), I think this is the officer calling to question Adnan as to whether or not he has seen Hae.

6:59 - L651A – In the vicinity of Adnan’s house/best buy/school: Adnan and Jay going home from Cathy’s. Adnan calls Yaser to tell him that he is on his way to mosque?

7:00 - L651A – Same tower: Jay (who is still with adnan) pages to jenn that they are on way over (adnan is going to drop jay off at her house)

At this point, I think Adnan drops Jay off, but Jay (who remember just paged Jenn using Adnan’s phone so we know he was in possession of the phone, slyly takes Adnan’s phone with him when he gets out of the car). I am not convinced this little theft was strategy to set up adnan but rather he was genuinely taking the phone so that he could communicate with Jenn during this next phase of the crime (burying Hae).

Jay and Jenn bury the body and stash hae’s car at the new sight 7:09 - L689B - leakin park: incoming call (adnan notices his cell is missing and is calling from someone else’s phone or a landline), some might think 9 minutes is not enough time to have dropped off jay and then for jay and jenn to decide what to do and then go to leakin park but 1) leakin park/ hae’s burial sight is very close to jenn’s house and 2) remember I thought that they coordinated their next steps earlier in the afternoon before Jay picked up Adnan. So I think during the time he was with Adnan, Jenn gathered the shovels/what they needed to bury the body.

7:16 - L689B - leakin park - incoming (maybe adnan is repeating the call because Jay didn’t answer the first time)- 8:04 - L653A - Tower near the site of he’s car final dump (not the mall like what they said happened because they both testified that Jenn picked Jay up from the mall parking lot where he was with adnan) : Jay pages Jenn. I think that he drove hae’s car and now he is sending Jenn a message to pick him up, she is probably nearby as I presumed she followed him in her car). Some may say that he could have paged Jenn when he and Adnan were leaving the car site so that she would meet them at the mall. But, how would she know to meet them at the mall? This was a page (which would have likely just displayed a call back number, and there were no incoming calls at this time signifying Jenn calling them back to be like "hey what's up).
8:05 - L653C - hae’s car dump sight: pages Jen again for good measure

All of the next calls are to Adnan’s friends only, so sometime between 8 and 9 Jay got the phone back to Adnan because all of these calls (except one) are made from the tower that pinpoints them to Adnan’s house.

9:01 - L651C - Adnan’s house - calls nisha 9:03 - L651C - Adnan’s house - calls krista 9:10 - L651C - Adnan’s house - calls Krista 9:57 - L651C - Adnan’s house - calls Nisha 10:02 - L698B - 10:02 - tower pings near Jay’s house? - Calls Yaser (idk geographically what else is in that area, like maybe adnan was making a run somewhere or maybe this was an erroneous ping or maybe he briefly stopped by Jay’s?) 10:29 - L651C - Adnan’s house - calls his friend Saad 10:30 - L651C - Adnan’s house - calls his friend Ann
