Jay helped Adnan because he was present during the murder and was left with little choice (my timeline using the call log/cell tower data)

This is a bit long, but I scanned the subreddit and didn’t see this scenario posted before, so here are my thoughts regarding what happened and why nobody’s stories match up (spoiler: everyone is lying). Adnan calls Jay the morning of 1/13 at 10:45 to wake him up and tell him he’s going to come get him. The 12:07 call to Jenn comes from tower L688A located west toward Ellicott City. Maybe this was just a random tower picking up the call, or maybe they were out in that area to do whatever it is Adnan needed Jay’s help with that morning. Whatever they were doing, it’s pretty clear that they weren’t shopping for Stephanie’s present (the stories diverge so much on this point it isn’t believable), but it was in both of their best interests to never mention what they were actually doing.

The next call pings a tower towards downtown Baltimore (L652A) at 12:41. Adnan likely needs to get back to school so Jay calls Jenn to see if she’s home so he can go hang out there. They incoming call at 12:43 also pings tower L652A. At this point, Jay takes Adnan back to school, and maybe Adnan lends Jay the car for a couple of reasons:

1. So Jay can head back to Ellicott City (his school is on the way) to finish whatever it is they were doing,

2. He let Jay borrow it as an excuse to get a ride home from Hae so they can talk, after which Adnan will get his car back from Jay and go to track practice

3. Perhaps he just let him borrow it so he can drive to Jenn’s

The next call at 2:36 is a “come and get me call”, but not the one the prosecution lays out. Adnan wants to talk to Hae; he initially scores a ride with her but is turned down after school because she is too busy.

Adnan calls Jay who is at Jenn’s place (cell tower L651B is in the vicinity of Jenn’s house) and asks him to pick him up at Woodlawn. Adnan probably has some time to kill before Jay can make it over from Jenn’s, so maybe he checks his email at the library which would validate Asia’s alibi. EDIT: Just found that Asia said in her affidavit that she saw Adnan in the library at 2:40, which would work if Adnan went to check his email after calling Jay from the library at 2:36.

Jay meets Adnan at the library, and they either wait for Hae to leave or Adnan knew Hae was going to run by Best Buy before picking up her cousin and they head there to meet her. If Hae left the school around 3ish that would probably match up with the time Jay got to Woodlawn and picked up Adnan.

3:15 incoming and 3:21 call to Jenn both ping L651C, which is near Best Buy. It is my opinion that both Jay and Adnan are at Best Buy and Adnan is either talking with Hae at this point or they are waiting for her to exit the store. During the discussion Hae tries to end the relationship and Adnan snaps, perhaps after seeing the “Don note” and kills Hae in a fit of jealous rage in the Best Buy parking lot. Now, on to the 3:32 Nisha call. 3 scenarios for this in my opinion:

1. The “butt dial” scenario. Maybe Jay tosses the phone on the passenger seat after talking with Jenn and Adnan sits on it when he hops into the car to tell him what just happened, perhaps he grabs the phone and squeezes too hard thus setting off the speed dial, maybe it gets dialed while moving the body, who knows.

2. Hae is running super late and a bored Adnan calls Nisha to kill some time, and hangs up when Hae leaves Best Buy

3. Adnan is some stone cold psychopath and after killing Hae he calls up Nisha and is all, “hey baby, what’s up”

2 and 3 are unlikely in my opinion. 2 doesn’t fit the fact that Hae had to go get her cousin 20 minutes earlier (but being a 17 year old girl maybe she was just super super late that day), and 3 just doesn’t seem something a 17 year old first time killer would do. So I think after killing Hae Adnan accidentally calls Nisha and realizes the phone is ringing after a couple of minutes and hangs up.

This would match up with a few things. Jay initially lied about where the “trunk pop” happened because he was worried about security cameras at Best Buy. Why would he be worried about security cameras that would corroborate his story and display the scene as he was describing? Because he was also at Best Buy during the murder and was trying to hide that. Also, Jay and Jenn insisting he was at Jenn’s house until 3:40 was likely calculated as that was just after the murder. He obviously wasn’t at Jenn’s place at this time as he called her at 3:21 from Best Buy.

3:48/3:52 calls they are moving the car to the I-70 Park and Ride and Jay is frantically calling around trying to figure out what to do.

Conveniently, the Park and Ride is on the way to Patrick’s house. At 4:12, Jay is at Patrick’s house after dropping of Hae’s car at the Park and Ride and he calls Jenn. He drops Adnan off at track practice and then goes back to either Jenn’s or his house. The 4:27 call comes from a tower near Jay’s (L654C) so perhaps it came from Jenn as he was on his way back to his place.

4:58 call is Adnan calling Jay to come pick him up. It still pings L654C so I think Jay is at home at his point trying to figure out what the hell to do.

5:38 call to Krista pings L653C which is near where the car was dropped off. I think they are probably scouting places to stash Hae’s car - perhaps at the suggestion of Patrick - and then head to Cathy’s.

After this, they head to Cathy’s place. No discrepancy regarding the 6:07, 6:09 and 6:24 calls.

At 6:59 Adnan calls Yaser from his cell at this mosque. Jay drops Adnan off at the mosque and pages Jenn at 7:00. EDIT: After further investigation it would be impossible for Jay/Adnan to be at the mosque and ping tower 651A. I do not know what they were doing here, but Jay mentions going to McDonald's near Woodlawn in one of his statements. Maybe he calls Yassir to pick him up at McDonalds for a ride to the mosque then Jay leaves to bury the body.

Two incoming calls at 7:09 and 7:16 ping L689B which means Jay has picked up Hae’s car from the Park and Ride and is in Leaken Park to bury the body.

8:04/8:05 pages to Jenn ping L653C near where the car was stashed. Jay has finished burying to body and needs Jenn to pick him up. Jenn doesn’t call back, so maybe two quick pages in a row was code to pick him up at a predetermined location.

By 9:01 Adnan has his phone back and the next few calls ping the tower near his mosque and house. I believe that Jay and Jenn dropped his car off at the mosque and Adnan got if afterwards.

At 10:02 the cell pings tower L698B near Jay’s. Perhaps Adnan swung by after to see how the burial and car stash went and to make sure Jay keeps quiet. Or maybe Adnan was at home and this was just a random cell ping.

Last two calls at 30/31 ping the tower near Adnan’s home and he is likely there.
