You guys scared him off with all that Browns should draft him talk.

27
sir_sweatervest•

Lol did you see the thread? Nobody said we should draft him. Not one person

-7
Beezer12WashingBird•

If he was available in a late round. I mean he can't be worse than Weeden, fucking Weeden.

9
maxpowerway•

Or Manziel. At least Weeden could throw the ball downfield. Manziel hasn't shown much of anything in his limited playing time.

4
Komcor•

Yeah but his parties are killer

1
Nightcinder•

Smart choice, He's too raw.

21
Daviroth•

He won't be able to show any improvement by staying at OSU. He will only play in blowouts.

-10
Nightcinder•

If he's as good as people want to make him out to be he'll beat out Braxton and Barrett.

6
Daviroth•

But he won't beat out Barrett. Anyone who watched the whole OSU season understands this. He will beat out Braxton because Braxton is an amazing football player but a meh QB. But he will be behind Barrett for the rest of his career at OSU.

6
Nightcinder•

I think Barrett is great, but Jones is smart in going back to get his degree. If the NFL doesn't work out he needs some sort of backup plan, he has an infant daughter to care about.

9
moodyfloyd•

we dont even know when barrett will be available to play again, and how he rebounds from his injury.

smart thing to do would be to start cardale at beginning of camp and give barrett the opportunity to prove he rebounded form his injury as the same player and truly should take over that starting role.

2015: Jones

2016: Barrett

2017: Barrett/Collier

2018: Collier/Gibson

braxton will not be the QB at OSU again (except an occasional trick play), he needs to realize that he should switch to a skill position, because he already did not have an NFL arm and his shoulder injury will not help that. this isn't "rookie of the year" or anything.

3
droidworkerbee•

There is precedent for him still getting drafted as a backup (see: Cassell, Matt).

1
jesus_zombie_attack•

That's ridiculous. He just won the conference championship and national championship. He will be the starter

1
sir_sweatervest•

I hear Braxton is going to Duke

1
rufus418•

HE COME TO PLAY SCHOOL SOME MORE

Good for him. Realizes that that degree can outlast his athletic career.

17
thumpernc24•

He's studying African American studies....I don't think a lucrative career is waiting.

I think he's staying in school in hopes to improve his body of work / draft stock. It's a gamble but I hope it pays off for him.

1
rufus418•

I might be wrong but in the press conference I'm pretty sure they said he's wants to do financial planning or something.

1
thumpernc24•

Perhaps he is changing major to something a little bit more career friendly.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2332137-cardale-jones-decision-is-everything-thats-right-with-college-football

1
rufus418•

Honestly I'm surprised he's not trying to get a communications degree or something. Dude's charismatic and regardless of how long he played could be a really good announcer/analyst for ESPN or something.

2
APF429•

This is kind of perfect for the Browns fans that want Cardale. It'd be too early to draft him this season but if Johnny doesn't work out this season and we are in the market for a QB....

7

Except my biggest fear may be realized now.... We draft Jameis. Dun dun dun!

1
Nightcinder•

I hope he goes to the Jets

2
Nightcinder•

Perfect case scenario is Johnny works out and we can draft him to sit behind Johnny or something of that sort.

-1
h3rp3r•

Yeah, and a perfect scenario also makes us all millionaires.

I'm willing to give Johnny some time to prove himself, I really want him to, but I'm not expecting him to.

2
Nightcinder•

I don't see any reason we should be writing off the kid, lets see what he does with a real QB coach and a proper OC

7
JohnnyFire•

...I mean, I can think of a few reasons.

Moreso, it's investment versus returns. We have to get some returns from this investment, and you usually don't see that in one season. Even if you know that Manziel is going to suck in 2015, you really can't justify not giving him another season because of the value we'd have to also spend on getting another QB.

It's part of the reason why our QB choices have been so poor; terrible value for where we're taking them, and it cannibalizes our ability to make better choices in the years that follow.

2
maxpowerway•

Good for him. He has a great opportunity to get a world class education now. The NFL will still be there when he is ready.

5
Entertainment-720•

Getting just a standard bachelors degree doesn't mean as much as it used to though

3
maxpowerway•

Considering he is planning to or is majoring in financial planning, it will give him the knowledge he needs to be able to manage his money.

4
Daviroth•

The NFL will still be there when he is ready.

This isn't a guarantee. I can guarantee you OSU will still be there whenever he is done playing the NFL, but I cannot guarantee you that he will play in the NFL now.

2
maxpowerway•

Neither is getting a world class education at a major university for free. By doing this, he is setting himself and his family up for success regardless of what happens when he gets to the NFL. How often do guys go to the NFL early, washout, and end up broke? Apparently up to 78% of NFL players go broke after they are done with the game - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_finances_of_professional_American_athletes

Cardale made the right decision. Good for him.

3
Daviroth•

Yeah but if he is smart enough to realize he needs the education he is smart enough to realize to save some money from the MILLIONS he would make to pay the 20-30k he would need to finish school. That's if OSU wouldn't cut him some slack which I'm about 150% sure they would.

0
maxpowerway•

Again, 78% of all players go broke after the NFL. 78%!!! He is going to study Financial Planning so he can be smart with his money. Apparently, he is also smart enough to know that he won't be able to manage it without the education and he's smart enough to know that he isn't ready for the NFL. All the money in the world doesn't mean anything after you've already pissed it all away or don't know what to do with it. He is playing the long game, not the here and now. Smart decision.

3
cancrdancr•

Looks like he values that world class education: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8454/8068250299_8f756c2223_z.jpg

-7
moodyfloyd•

maybe you should listen to his press conference. and never post that again.

2
Godszn•

Kudos to Jones but I think he made the wrong choice. The lack of QB depth in this draft along with the crazy hype could make Jones a high draft pick, and get him a lot of money. He's so raw I can only think his stock is gonna fall the longer he stays, and he's gonna lose ALOT of money. If he somehow beats out JT and gets to be a starter, I can't imagine him playing so good his stock goes up, like i said, he's just so raw.

5
Nightcinder•

Whose to say the hype extends to the GM's?

4
Back41DayOnly•

Did you not see who we drafted last year?

4
aggroCrag32•

Who was a hype pick? If you say Manziel then remember that he had two WHOLE seasons of work to judge him from. Jones has played 3 full games, each of which had Elliot running for 200+.

1
Godszn•

I do think hype will extend to some GM's, but more-so the desperation for QBs in the NFL and the lack of quality QBs in this upcoming draft

1
[deleted]•

Excellent move. I can't see us winning more than 4 games next year with Johnny. This would put the Browns in the driver's seat for a much better QB class - Hackenberg, Cook, and Cardale.

3
Nightcinder•

Given we won 7 with Hoyer.. Johnny should be an improvement over Hoyer if we get a half-decent QB coach and OC. Schedule may be harder, but improved coaching hsould help a lot.

3
[deleted]•

Johnny should be an improvement over Hoyer

I've seen nothing to suggest that will be the case.

7
Daviroth•

Johnny has much better physical traits in almost every single category. He is just straight up a better athlete than Hoyer. He only lacks in execution, if coaching can get that up (like the guy suggested) than he will be better than Hoyer.

2
Nightcinder•

Given that the QB coach was fired, I'm guessing there was far too much 'buddy buddy' going on.

2
[deleted]•

No disagreements with physical traits being better than Hoyer, but his mental capabilities are my concern. I hope he actually tries learning from the coaches this year.

2
Nightcinder•

Better arm, better accuracy, mobility. If he can stop throwing off his back foot the kid has a great arm.

1
[deleted]•

Can't read a defense. Bails the pocket at the first sign of pressure. Won't step up into the pocket and keep his eyes downfield. Terrelle Pryor is a great athlete, doesn't make him a good or even average NFL QB.

3
SmellyWetDawg•

4? I'm thinking with Johnny we have a strong shot at 0-16. But, he'll get injured eventually so whoever our backup is we may win 1 or 2.

3
strokerspc•

Not a good decision IMO. His stock is probably as high as it's going to be right now. There's a reason he was behind J.T. Barrett. He'll be second string the rest of his career now. He should've declared now and been a 3rd or 4th rounder that someone who had a few years to develop him could. And while they're on my mind, FUCK THE STEELERS!

2
Bloody_Hangnail•

Fucking Steelers would have probably drafted him too... Having him sit behind Rapistburger for his last 2-3 useful years and then they would have been set for the next 15.

1
ClutchPapi34•

You say that but JT was behind Braxton and everyone likes to talk like JT is way better than Braxton. Cardale had a better start against better teams than JT did. And he'll also get all the spring reps so he'll have a great chance to win the job. If he wins the job he could be a top 10 pick next year.

And if he doesn't...he's still fucking massive, still will have a rocket arm, still will be cool under pressure, and still won't have any arrests. The NFL will be there. Christian Ponder got drafted top 15 (as the 4th QB taken) with 3 years of average college play and worse physical tools. I have a hard time telling a poor kid from the inner city with no father and a drug addict mother that he's making a poor decision to complete his education before moving on. And this makes him a legend in Columbus. If the NFL ends up not working out beyond that first contract he won't have a hard time getting work down here. He's a good kid and already one of my all time favorite Buckeyes with just 3 starts.

EDIT: Fuck the Steelers

1
topper_mango•

A guy with his size and arm and with the three games that he has on his resume will get a look no matter what. Good on him for not declaring for the draft.

Even if he sits for the rest of his college career, I can't see how getting lost on the depth chart behind a legit heisman candidate would be held against him.

2
BigFatDynamo•

I love how pissed Florio is over at PFT. It's always amazing when the national media gets trolled or lampooned, they take it so fucking personally.

The kid may not have made the best financial choice, but I hope like hell he can win the starting job in camp this year; I also hope that this is a true representation of actual maturity from the whole school tweet debacle some time ago. Who knows, he could have just been having a shitty day with classes. At any rate, I loved him these last three games, he brought some great publicity to his high school, and hopefully he can improve his mechanics and become a true NFL caliber QB. No matter where or if he plays, if he has his head on straight and finds a way to provide for his kids, he won.

2
jabb0•

Smart Man

2
Daviroth•

Questionable. For his sake I hope he gets another chance to show what he's got, I just don't know if he will.

1
obiwannshinobi•

Should we post articles on every college qb that isn't going to the draft here too?

1
shaneration•

It's crazy that he chooses to stay in college just so he can sell cars afterwards.

Why is this in r/Browns?
