A concrete tip for staying away from porn - Always remember that it gets better
This post is part of an ongoing series of posts about staying away from porn
Always remember that it gets better
Let's face it, as porn addicts, we will struggle at times. Sexual imagery is everywhere, and we can get blindsided in a second by a trigger. A rough day at work can sometimes make it difficult for us to resist what has served us in the past as a stress reliever, even when we know that the momentary relief that it may give is far from worth it.
Even as we become more proficient at using our tools of recovery, our addiction may try to fool us into forgetting the good days. If our addiction can convince us that every day of our lives will be a struggle, then maybe, just maybe, that will make us more likely to give in and act out.
The concrete tip for dealing with this is simply to remember. Remember the good days, the days of freedom from that which would enslave you. Realize that your future holds more days like that. And realize also that if you follow good practices, the bad days will certainly become fewer and farther between.
If I may be so bold as to paraphrase Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: The arc of addiction recovery is long, but it bends toward freedom.
