.Zpr / .Ztl issue on load. Do I need to reinstall? Or am I overlooking something?

Hi guys.

Basically, everytime I open my .zpr file for my brick wall - it looks like THIS (notice the grainy details/lack of polys) http://i.imgur.com/b0Exvkd.png

Instead of the actual high detail akin to THIS (please note, different wall, Zapplinked BEFORE I exited Zbrush - same issue twice) http://i.imgur.com/xV2Rtlg.png

I have tried everything I know.

I've been saving the project, the document and all tools to the same folder on my desktop. No matter what I do with saving, if I open the .zpr file - it loses all of the polygons like in the screenshot above.

I truly apologise if this is a silly solution - a guy on here has already walked me through the saving steps again - I've followed them exactly and I'm still getting the same issue. I must be overlooking something?

More info on the workflow.

  1. Make the plane
  2. 4 different Z tool individually sculpted and saved bricks all at 250-300k polys each.
  3. Create a row of bricks using the Z tools on a layer, reposition using move/rotate/scale.
  4. Repeat

The only solution I see right now is to do all the work I need to do without ever loading my project... but I'm sure it's something I'm missing.

A sincere thank you to anyone who can help.

This is weird, wow. It looks exactly the same as something remeshed with a polish of 0.

I have no clue, don't use zapplink and not sure if that would make a difference. Have you tried to make sure you don't have a displacement map loaded in? Make sure you're using polypaint and not a texture?

Wish I could help. If you get no help here don't hesitate to send this along to Pixologic support, they have really responsive and excellent support; going so far as to personally check out files you dropbox them.

Thanks a lot for the reply :D

I'm not the most knowledgeable at Zbrush by any means. I tend to only use it to sculpt textures.

The thing is, I've tried multiple different files all from scratch and the same thing happens with this workflow every time. the only polypaint is on a gridded texture behind everything - nothing at all elsewhere. Zapplink won't be the issue, this time I didn't even use it. No displacement maps anywhere (to my knowledge).

UPDATE: OK, this is interesting. It is happening to EVERY .zpr file. Even the ones that come with Zbrush, i.e. ones that I know I haven't done anything to... Not sure if this changes much in terms of troubleshooting?

Has this done this in the past or is this just now happening?

What I would probably personally do just to nuke everything (if you feel like you've tried everything and want to be reckless :P) is save your .zpr files somewhere safe and delete the startup config files in the zstartup folder. I think that's where they read from, it's not in appdata>roaming if you're using windows (know how some programs store your config files there? I don't think zbrush does). I'd do this with the expectation that zbrush would rewrite the startup file. Someone here talks about doing it to reset ctrl-z not working.

Failing that, you might just uninstall and reinstall zbrush fresh to get rid of whatever weird preferences or processes seem to be going on when you save or open (might be a pain to reset your brushes and stuff but I'm guessing that would probably fix it, like there's some weird glitch or something).

If you try that let me know how it works out, I honestly have no clue but that sounds super glitchy or corrupted somehow. That's really bizarre.

PS disclaimer: I'm not sure if there are a limited number of uninstalls/reinstalls per key or anything like that so do this all at your own risk. But if you move your .zpr files somewhere safe and make sure not to delete them I don't think you'll lose anything from them. I sent over a corrupted file to pixologic once and it worked right as rain just passing it around like a volleyball (despite being corrupted of course so it didn't open, but you can pass them around and they seem to remain independent of any zbrush installs and don't seem tied to a particular copy)

I've given you advice before, and I think I know the answer.

Is your copy of Zbrush legit? If it's cracked, you have your answer.
