I was addicted to carrots!
A few years ago while trying to quit smoking,I became addicted to carrots...yes carrots. Not the large ones, but the baby carrots that you can buy in 2lb bags.I ate about 5lbs or more per week.
How can you become addicted to carrots?
If you have an addictive personality, like I have, anything can become an addiction.Doesn't have to be drugs or alcohol.Addiction can come in many forms with any substance.
When seeing my doctor,I was told that it was most likely the carotene or vitamin A I was addicted too.Not to mention the sugar! Carrots are FULL of sugar.
I gained weight and I turned orange.I am not kidding. My skin took on an orange/yellow tint and it was most noticeable on my palms.I didn't see it though, because with any addiction, denial is the biggest enemy. As an addict of any kind,we tend to gloss over or reason away why physical or mental problems are happening. We never attribute it to the actual addiction.
I researched carrot addiction and came up with just one other case.It was a mirror image of mine and it made me feel like I was crazy.
The addiction persisted for a year without any real problems besides the skin change colour. My dr wasn't concerned so neither was I. Then I had to have surgery for an unrelated problem.
Surgery went well, but the surgeon told me that when he opened me up,he noticed that some of my insides were an orange/yellow tinge and he became concerned. He ordered a liver panel and lo and behold my liver enzymes were dangerously elevated.
Quit eating carrots or suffer serious problems.I gave up the carrots, but it took me 4 months of serious withdrawal.I had the sweats and I was so moody.I was angry and sad and pretty much went through the physical and mental withdrawal of someone else giving up an addictive substance.
I was detoxing from carotene and sugar and vitamin A and I was suffering, but four months later I was carrot clean and my liver had recovered.
I cant eat baby carrots raw anymore, but I can eat them cooked.Looking back it seems carrots was a dumb thing to be addicted too,but it proves a point that addictive personalities can become addicted to the most mundane substances and struggle with it.
I have been a recovered addict for 3 years.
