Is Canal street a safe place to live for the summer?

Can anyone who lives nearby chime in? I currently live near Willow Lawn, and I'm thinking of renting a place on Canal Street for the summer, but I'm not into getting mugged or carjacked. One of my friends is acting like its extremely dangerous but I'm not so sure it will be bad. I'm a male as well so I usually feel pretty safe walking alone. Any information is appreciated, thanks!

Dude save your monies. You can drive there from Willow Lawn in like ten minutes. With that being said most likely you will be murdered.

Well long story short I don't really have a choice and I have to move out. So its that bad huh?

It's safe. Lived in Shockoe Bottom for years. Be smart and be aware of your surroundings. You'll have a blast.

No, it isn't that bad.

Safe and summer just don't go well together here.

Just don't want walk down the street at 2am drunk and alone. You will be fine. Your car will get broken into, don't leave anything in it.

Thank you! This is the impression I had of the area. I don't drink so I don't even have a reason to be out past 12.

There are literally thousands of people living on and in the vicinity of Canal St. Most of them have not been mugged, carjacked or murdered. Could it happen to you? Yes. Statistically, you're pretty safe though.

I agree with you, but I wanted some outside opinions, thanks for the link too!

You will probably want a roof over your head. Many homeless people hang out on canal street and you might get stabbed for your backpack.

Yeah, based on the title alone I thought he was talking about living in the plaza where all the homeless people are.

Yes, it's fine, your friend needs to pull up their big girl panties

Where on Canal? There aren't many places to live along there. I think all of it will probably be safer than the VCU side of Belvidere, or the Shockoe area. Both of those are in closer proximity to ghettos. I think anywhere along Canal is isolated enough that not many criminals would bother drifting down there looking for opportunities.

The "ghettos" (federal housing projects) are north of Broad.

I was using the term more loosely to mean places where lots of people live who will rob you.
