Eddie Brock/Venom (Marvel)

comics

#Background

As a young and promising journalist, Eddie Brock earned a name for himself when he interviewed an alleged serial killer, the Sin Eater. However, Spider-Man caught the real killer and revealed that Eddie’s contact was merely a hoax. Eddie quickly lost his job and way.

His hopes and dreams shattered, Eddie sought to take his life when instead, something else took it. Spider-Man’s rejected symbiote sensed Eddie’s desperation and rage and together they became VENOM!

Editor's note The Venom symbiote has had several hosts, but in this respect thread, I am focusing solely on Eddie Brock as Venom. Like a lot of comic book characters, has his inconsistencies. I hope to provide a balanced view of the character, so each section begins with low or standard feats and finishes with higher, but inconsistent showings and limits. I did my best, but please let me know if you spot a mistake, disagree, or want to contribute. Thanks for reading!

#Strength

Eddie Brock

After losing his job, Eddie Brock found solace in the weight room. Even without the symbiote, he has demonstrated peak levels of human strength. Marvel has him listed at 700 pounds.

Venom

As Venom, the two have demonstrated impressive levels of strength. They consistently overpower Spider-man, and have even been able to stand up to some true powerhouses. The symbiote does not need to be totally intact to give Eddie super strength.

Venom still occasionally gets overpowered

#Durability

While Venom can be knocked around, he is highly resistant to harm from physical impact.

Fire and sound

Venom is notoriously vulnerable to fire and sonic attacks. These are some of the only attacks that cause Venom any sort of pain. However, Venom has shown on many occasions that he can resist the pain and debilitating effects of the attacks

Fire

Sound

So, Venom can get taken down. Usually, it’s done by separating Eddie and the symbiote and getting him with enough physical force.

#Speed

Venom demonstrates good speed against Spider-man, but lacks a lot of feats against others. Some of this may be because he relies on his durability to tank hits. He rarely tries to dodge (see Durability.) It also may be because spider-sense does not work against the symbiote. In general, though, he seems to be in the same ballpark as Spider-man although less agile.

#Symbiote

Venom uses the symbiote in a number of different manners. In his first appearances, he had limited control, but he increased his abilities over time. He still never demonstrated the same control as Carnage, and only inconsistently showed the extreme size shifting that Mac Gargan did.

The symbiote has shown that it has limits to its mass. In one of Venom’s early appearances the symbiote depleted itself trying to make enough webbing. However, this has not been seen again even though it looks like Venom has used large amounts of webbing.

The symbiote is revealed to actually live off chemicals in the brain (adrenaline in some instances and phenethylamine in others) and eventually the symbiote does eat brains

It should also be noted, that the symbiote does not seem to give Venom spider-sense.

#Personality

Depending on the writer, Venom can be anywhere from fairly capable to idiotic. He is always obsessive. The symbiote gave him knowledge and memories of Peter’s life and he often uses that information to psychologically attack Spider-man. He is far from stable and has psychotic episodes and delusions. He believes he protects innocents but often puts innocent bystanders in danger or even kills them if he thinks his purposes are more important. Opponents (especially Spider-man) are able to use his instability against him.
